Having been uninspired by our hotel and been to another Ironbridge pub that stopped doing food at 8pm on a Monday, we arrived just after 9 at the Malthouse to be shown to a table efficiently and in a friendly manner.
The red decor is a bit loud for my taste, but does make for a unique atmosphere.
Thankfully most of the specials board had sold out.... as the board, although neat, had far too much writing on it to be easily deciphered, so if you go for specials make sure you have your reading glasses - There are some goodies among it all, and probably well worth the effort.
Sadly I had been grazing before so opted for just a starter, whereas my companions went for full maincourses. However, the size of the starter was more like a main course... surely for sharing, but apparently not, and I gaily tucked into delicious olives and home made hummus while my friends tucked into the most superb looking steak and ale pie and burger respectively.
The steak and ale pie had a beautifully risen pastry crust, and the pie was filled with good sized chunks of steak, and was declared the best he had ever had, and given that he spends around half the nights of the year in hotels, that is a pretty good recommendation, The burger looked delicious and came with superb looking twice cooked chips.. firm on the outside, and melting inside... no comments made - he just ate the lot!
Backed up with very good cheerful service, the value was most excellent, and the Malthouse has an entry in my personal list of places to go to when next in the area.
