Having been uninspired by our hotel and been to another Ironbridge pub that stopped doing food at 8pm on a Monday, we arrived just after 9 at the Malthouse to be shown to a table efficiently and in a friendly manner.

The red decor is a bit loud for my taste, but does make for a unique atmosphere.

Thankfully most of the specials board had sold out.... as the board, although neat, had far too much writing on it to be easily deciphered, so if you go for specials make sure you have your reading glasses - There are some goodies among it all, and probably well worth the effort.

Sadly I had been grazing before so opted for just a starter, whereas my companions went for full maincourses. However, the size of the starter was more like a main course... surely for sharing, but apparently not, and I gaily tucked into delicious olives and home made hummus while my friends tucked into the most superb looking steak and ale pie and burger respectively.

The steak and ale pie had a beautifully risen pastry crust, and the pie was filled with good sized chunks of steak, and was declared the best he had ever had, and given that he spends around half the nights of the year in hotels, that is a pretty good recommendation, The burger looked delicious and came with superb looking twice cooked chips.. firm on the outside, and melting inside... no comments made - he just ate the lot!

Backed up with very good cheerful service, the value was most excellent, and the Malthouse has an entry in my personal list of places to go to when next in the area.

Have visited this pub/restaurant for lunch on a number of occasions, most recently in early September with my wife and mother. There is always a warm welcome with plenty of seating both inside and at the front and rear of the premises outside if you are lucky enough to visit on a fine day. There is an excellent choice of food from tasty sandwiches and baguettes, to formal sunday lunches and an extensive wider menu. For special occasions, there are fine wines, champagnes and drinks catering for all tastes. The decor sets this venue apart and makes a visit here as part of a trip to the historic town of Ironbridge something to remember.

Having gone to Ironbridge gorge to do a AA walk we decided on the spur of the moment to have Sunday lunch first. We parked at Dale End Park and walked the short distance towards the Bridge. As we passed The Malthouse on the left hand side of the road we decided to pop in and see what was on offer. There were at least 3 real ales and we opted for the Ironbridge bitter, having sampled the Ironbridge Brewery IPA on previous occasions. The beer was beautiful! There were lots of tables reserved when we got there about noon. We were served straight away and offer a nice table in the window. There was a choice of one, two or three courses starting at £8.25. As we were doing a 5 mile walk after we opted for one course, I had the chicken and my wife the beef. Both meals were quickly served with an excellent selection of fresh vegetables. Both meats were beautifully cooked and presented. My wife found the carrots a little under-done for her liking but everything else was just right. The service was very good and mustard produced on request. Plates were promptly cleared when finished and the pudding menus offered together with the get out clause "or are you too full". This made declining puddings easier and we felt under no pressure to order one.
We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit and will definitely return. We fancy staying in one of the rooms they offer for B & B as we are sure the standard of the rooms will be good based on our experience that day.

We ate at the Malthouse on a Sunday evening expecting a typical pub style meal but were surprised firstly by the price of drinks (£14.20 for a round that cost £10.40 for the same drinks at another pub earlier in the day) and the meals. There were a small number of 'reasonably priced' pub meals but the majority were very expensive- £9 for a typical starter, £16-£19 for a main course with lots of puddings starring at £6.95 with many priced at £8.95- definitely not pub prices. Oh and if you don't like bright red, give the Malthouse a miss, the walls, everything is- red! One positive to finish- the chips are excellent.
