Best Western Plus Kenwood Hall Hotel

Used to use this hotel a lot when it was a Marriott. Got a cheap rate and that should be the sign right there. Hotel still feels the same, however every time I went to reception there was a queue.

Room corridors go from a mix of really smart and contemporary to really shabby (mine). I tripped up over the loose carpet in the morning and let the hotel know, nothing done with it. Could only watch BBC1 as the rest of the tv was hazy and out of tune. Asked them to fix it after first night but not done.

I would pay more for a room that has the amenities for this current market.

Room Tip: Dont book through a third party site, book directly with the hotel.

Any establishment can experience problems, but it's how the problems are dealt with that determines whether you would recommend it to others. In this case, we had quite a few problems with our five night stay at Kenwood Hall, but everything was sorted out cheerfully and quickly and as a result I would certainly stay here again.

The first thing that went wrong was that when we finally arrived after a long journey, after midnight, the room we'd booked for the three of us (two adults, one child) turned out to only have a double bed. It took the night staff a good twenty minutes to find us a second room, and while it was a shame that my husband had to sleep across the corridor and I spent the night with my very fidgety nine year old, we were all so desperate for sleep that we were happy with this compromise. The next morning while we were out, our luggage was moved to a room with an additional single bed, which was great.

We ate in the restaurant once, and while the food was delicious and nicely presented, two different plates over two different courses were completely wrong, which meant we were all eating at different times. Again, sorted out happily by the apologetic staff - but how is it possible to get this wrong twice in one meal?

On one day, our newspaper was inexplicably not ordered - despite having been asked on check in whether we wanted this every day of our stay. It arrived successfully every other day, despite the room change - how could it be that it wasn't ordered on one random day?

Coming back from one of our day trips, both of our room keys suddenly stopped working which necessitated a trip back to reception to get them fixed. Again, quite cheerfully - but why?

There were other issues that we didn't even bother to report. The shower in the first room we stayed in only ran hot and wouldn't adjust. On one random day our room didn't get serviced, as we came back to it to find a 'do not disturb' sign on the door (we hadn't put it there). It was late, so we didn't bother saying anything. On the days the room was serviced, toiletries weren't replenished, so we ran out of shower gel. Not the end of the world. Tea and coffee wasn't replenished either, so we ran out of sugar on the last day. For the first three days, we only had two towels between us - but if you put them on the heated towel rail, this didn't matter. Then suddenly we had two each. At breakfast, one of the waiters dribbled tea over my son's leg - potentially nasty but we moved him out of the way in time. The pillowcase on my son's bed had what looked like spots and smears of dried blood on it that hadn't laundered out, but we just swapped it for the 'spare' in the wardrobe.

It's hard to get cross, though, when all the staff we encountered were so lovely. They were always friendly, willing to help and happy to see us, and where we did report problems as I said, they were always sorted out. But we were at the point of wondering what else was going to go wrong.

Putting all that aside, this is a great little hotel. The rooms (we saw three of them, don't forget) are very nice, the leisure facilities are clean and attractive, with the added bonus of towels provided. The breakfasts were good, the coffee was nice and the setting for the hotel is beautiful and peaceful despite being close to the city centre. The car park is often full at weekends, but there was usually parking around the back of the hotel at the meeting rooms end.

Don't be put off by our issues, as it seems we were just very unlucky. I would definitely come back, and I would still recommend the hotel to friends and family.

We had a great deal through Travelzoo which included Executive room which was great - roomy, balcony, dressing gowns. The room was clean and spacious and the bed was comfy. Pillows could have been a bit more susbtantial but otherwise excellent nights sleep - no noise and nice and dark. Meal was good and staff were very helpful. Pool is nice - warm - but fairly small. The gym has a good range of equipment. Good breakfast too. In terms of price- we had a great deal but otherwise starters were £6, mains £14.50-18 and desserts £5-£6. Wine - 500 ml carafe was £15.

We spent two nights at this hotel in October 2012, choosing it over the city centre hotels because it offered free parking, free wifi and free access to a health club with a swimming pool, which were chargeable extras at the other hotels we looked at.

Our double room (ground floor, facing onto the car park) was fairly large and well equipped. The decor in the bathroom was perhaps a little tired in places, but overall the room was clean and very comfortable. If I had a quibble it would be that a blind or net curtain would be an improvement (there is an old curtain track indicating that one has been fitted in the past) because the room felt a bit like a goldfish bowl - you could see straight in from the car park. I appreciated the iron and ironing board provided as well as the trouser press.

The small health club is fairly new and the equipment is of a good quality. We enjoyed the pool, but it seems popular locally - when we tried to swim in the late afternoon it was fully occupied by children's swimming lessons, but was quieter early in the morning, An adults-only slot operates in the middle of the day, though we didn't make use of it.

WiFi is free throughout the hotel although you do need to re-register every 30 minutes unless you buy premium access. Still, it's nice to see a hotel that understands how off-putting it is to be charged a ridiculous sum for a few hours' internet access - this system is a reasonable compromise. Certain unnamed Sheffield city centre hotels please note - this was the clincher that sent us to the Kenwood Hall rather than to you!

The breakfast was good and plentiful, and full marks for managing to have a hot buffet breakfast that was not dried up or tired as can often be the case. We were on a special discount package and this turned out to be a good move, as we saved 1/3 on the standard breakfast rate as well as a discounted room rate. Lovely views of the grounds from the restaurant - they must be a great place to sit on summer evenings. We saw a fox in the grounds and were told that foxes and badgers are a common sight.

A special mention for the staff, who were cheerful and friendly almost without exception and went out of their way to help us. The ones we met were an excellent advertisement for the hotel.

You really need a car to get around Sheffield if you're staying here, and finding it can be a challenge without a satnav, but in our opinion it was excellent value compared to some of the other options, particularly with the extras it provided as standard, and is only a few minutes by car from the centre. We would certainly use it again.

Had our wedding at this hotel and the day itself was fabulous how ever it did have some downsides
Not too impressed with service in the main restaurant as had to wait in excess of 20 minutes between courses
The bridal suite was way too hot even with the heating off, the decoration in the room was tired, rusty fittings in the bathroom and the bath had been repaired a few times.
Main Course at our wedding breakfast was poor and no where resembled the meal we had at our menu tasting.
The staff at the hotel though were excellent and breakfast the following morning was well done

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the Old Wing Area

Kenwood Hall is stunning. We stayed one night and opted for an executive room. We were not disappointed. The room was big, light and airy, with its own balcony. The room overlooked the grounds and backed on to a small lake (or large pond, depending on your outlook!). The bed was extremely comfortable and the room well equipped. It was also very peaceful, we had a good nights sleep, uninteruppted. Breakfast was a buffet, serving hot and cold. It was very good, and the staff were attentive and friendly. Sadly we didn't have time to make use of the spa and health suite facilities. It is set on a quiet, leafy street away from te noise of the town centre, but still only 5 minutes drive away so conveniently located.

My only small issue is that car parking isn't very good. We were lucky to get a space, as there was a wedding going on and there were cars everywhere. This is a very big hotel but it seems like there was only really parking for 50 or so cars.

Room Tip: The executive suites are worth the extra money.

Stayed here for one night, absolutely fantastic stay all round. I do not really understand the handful of negative comments written.
The room was light, airy and large, perfectly modern and in keeping with the hotel style, super large bed which was So comfortable, lovely sheets.
The lady on reception was friendly, professional and above all extremly helpful.
Breakfast was great, the food was hot and well presented and fresh, good variety of breakfast, the staff were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately we had no time for an evening meal but will defiantly be back to sample.
The pool was gorgeously warm and the jacuzzi was a perfect temperature, quite warm.fab hair dryers in the ladies changing room, with the added touch of dispensed shower gell.
I loved the ambience of this hotel, beautiful surroundings with a scenic lake, worth a little stroll.
We are a well travelled couple and are going to rush back soon for some more pampering, loved this place, almost too good to be true at paying just over 30 pounds each, wow, exceptional.
