Description: Cubana is both a Tapas restaurant and Cuban bar where live music is prominent throughout the week with DJ's and dancing at weekends. Having re-located to Leopold Square almost 3 years ago after 14 highly successful years on nearby Trippet Lane, Cubana is one of the most authentic and well respected venues in Sheffield. The decor is understated, with a theme of 'faded elegance showcasing some amazing original artwork throughout. The extensive menu combines classic Spanish tapas style dishes with South American flare and flavour. Many of the original culinary team of experienced chefs have been in place since their very first day of opening back in November 2000 and this is a major factor as to why Cubana has such a great reputation for top quality and consistently tasty food. A lively atmosphere is helped by great music and energetic presence of Sheffield's Latin community

My wife and I were in Sheffield on business earlier this month (staying two nights at the Sheffield Hilton). Internet research prior to our visit threw up Cubana as an interesting alternative to the usual Indian/Chinese/Thai restaurants, so we decided to give it a try on Thursday 9 September.

Unbeknown to us both food and drink is at happy hour prices from 5:00PM to 6:30PM, so arriving there at 5:50PM we managed to order 8 different tapas and two rounds of cocktails during this time period.

There is only one way to describe the food - STUPENDOUSLY FANTASTIC!! The flavours were so good each plate was returned to the kitchen all but licked clean.

Until the live music started at 8:30PM (Jazz on a Thursday) we relaxed with a selection of South American bottled beers while the restaurant slowly filled up. When we eventually left the bill was a very reasonable GBP58 for two extremely satisfied customers.

I love this place even though it has made me violently sick twice. The food is good but the atmosphere better. I presume everyone who has reviewed this place has given it 5 out of 5 for atmosphere. Before the smoking ban it was better because it was the comman gesture after your meal to have a cuban cigar, this has now gone but the late evening salsa and dancing is still around. There are two sitting, the second sitting gets the table for the night and from about 10 its packed through til about 1.

We went on a busy Saturday night having booked in the week, had no problems with tables as others have reported, we were sat down promptly on arrival and received good service throughout the meal. We ate at about 10 and while there was music, it was at a sensible volume not hindering conversation. A great selection of tapas (raciones really, the portions are quite large) and pretty authentic. Particularly enjoyed the albóndigas, pollo y chorizo and the patatas a lo pobre. I'd like to see croquetas on the menu though!
