“Not the 2nd best hotel in Sheffield!”
Reviewed February 23, 2009

The Fulwood Inn was billed as the 2nd best hotel in Sheffield by TripAdvisor reviews. I would not agree with this assessment.
Whilst the service and room were generally up to standard, the quality of the food was very poor.

Our room was fairly large and bright and nicely decorated. However, the bathroom lacked a bath and the shower floor was flimsy. It felt more like a B&B than a hotel for the price we paid. Also, the lovely LCD TV was miles away from the bed and I couldn't see it very well. Free Wi-Fi was a big and welcome plus though.

In the evening we had some food, which was very average indeed. At the table next to us, they were not happy with one of their main courses and refused to pay! I would not expect such a lack of quality from a pub of this kind. You know most of the stuff is frozen, but its not that hard to microwave it to be honest!

In the morning, we had breakfast and ordered a full english. Service was a bit muddled but we didn't mind too much. Contrary to other reviewers, the food was not freshly cooked to order, unless you count a microwave in that. My wife's scrambled egg looked disgusting and the sausages were awful. On the plus side the bacon was delicious and there was plenty of food. I'm a bit of a breakfast connoisseur as you might gather and to be frank I have had much better at B&Bs that cost less.

The staff were polite and friendly at all times, so no complaints there. However I would not recommend this hotel as I don't believe it offers decent value for money.

I stayed here whilst in Sheffield for a job interview at the University and it was about 25 mins walk. Perhaps a bit too far if you want to walk to the city centre. The rooms have been recently renovated and are clean and modern with LCD TV and a great shower room.

The reception is at the bar which is a bit awkward when they are busy and the instructions on how to get in if the front door is locked are a bit of a flaf, but not really a big deal.

Breakfast was cooked to order and was good, but it was too quiet as I there were only 2 table there on each morning.

Having read the reviews on Trip Advisor and needing a hotel in Sheffield for our daughters graduation we booked this hotel's family room for two nights. The room was well decorated and clean (see pictures) we were pleased that it was not like other family rooms we have stayed in (it had no bunk beds!). There were two nice single beds and a double with plenty of room to move around. The bathroom was large with a good sized shower. There was plenty of washing products and a promise of more from reception if you had left anything behind. The TV was an adequate size flat screen one with freeview & radio. There was tea and coffee making facilities with plenty of supplies.
As we settled in we noticed ear plugs by the bed and an invitation to use them for a good nights sleep. Our suspicions were raised. When the pub was busy with dinners we noticed that every time a downstairs door banged the room shuddered - this was not too bad.
In the early hours a generator started up which was the reason for the ear plugs! Anyone staying in rooms 1,2 or 3 beware. As I had the ear plugs in it did not bother me but was very noticeable when the ear plugs came out.
The breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice and variety. We could have eaten in the evenings at the pub which had a 2 for 1 offer however we did not as we were in the city during the evenings. We did enjoy having a drink in the bar which was very convenient.
There was easy access into the city via the 40 & 120 which ran regularly along the Fulwood road - the bus stop being about 100 meters away from the hotel.
All in all a comfortable Pub / Restaurant / Hotel

This is the first time I have written a review. I feel that I must as I booked this after reading the reviews. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this hotel. The room was big, comfortable and clean. We also had a great evening meal. The breakfast was really good as well. I never book a hotel until I have read the reviews .

We were visiting family in the area and booked a Saturday night stay on the hotel brewery website (Marstons). To be honest, we had second thoughts afterwards largely because our experience of staying in English pub/hotels has not been brilliant and especially with it being a Saturday night.

We need not have worried. The rooms have recently been refurbished to a high standard and are very comfortable. Ours was at the front and was large (by normal UK standards) but I think it was bigger than all but one of the other 10 (there is a plan of all the rooms on the door with the fire evacuation instructions). Clean white bed linen, comfortable bed, modern decor, large flat screen TV and a nicely appointed bathroom. The pub was busy with early evening diners but was quiet later on, just a few conversations in the car park at closing time. No noise at all from the rooms by us or from the bars below.

The hotel is in lovely grounds in a very nice, leafy part of Sheffield.

Not cheap (£89) but good value for what you get. Thoroughly recommended!

  • Liked — Very comfortable, modern room.
  • Disliked — Over stuffed pillow!

I booked this hotel for my mum and dad to stay in when they went to the crucible for the world snooker championship. So I am writing on their behalf.

They said that the hotel was great, the food in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced. The owners were fantastic and made a point of ensuring that they were having a good time, they were chatty and attentive. Breakfast was good and the hotel is not to far from the city centre if you dont mind getting on the bus.

Visiting Sheffield to take daughter from USA to Univ. of Sheffield. This is closest hotel to the Ranmoor dorm area (2 blocks) where all the international exchange students stay at Ranmoor Annex.

Excellent accommodations. It has the charm of a warm US Bed and Breakfast but you stay in a mansion that was created for the Sheffield Steel mills owner. Beautiful rooms with modern bathroom facilities. Comfortable beds. Scenic grounds, nice patio and in one of the safest wooded areas of fine English homes in Sheffield.

We were treated by the managers and staff like we were members of the family. Room includes a full English breakfast in their fine restaurant area on 1st floor (see pictures). Mangers, David and Linda were super and they helped foreign travelers like us with so many questions and directions. Linda was an old English "mum" that serves the breakfasts and cared for us so well. The restaurant has a quiet pub and great evening menu which is made even better when the 2nd entree is free.

It was about a 20 min. walk to the City Centre campus or a take the bus which runs every 10 minutes and you can catch it just outside the building on Fullwood Road. Walks in the hilly area led us to wonderful little restaurants like the Bulls Head Pub.

I am a tough traveler to satisfy, normally. But this was an exceptional place to stay. It came recommended by a trip advisor named PintPot and are we thankful for her suggestion.
May be tough to find in the Yellow Pages. Look under Marston's Inns. If you are going to Sheffield and have stayed in chain type hotels, take a chance and experience the warmth and charm of the "Hidden Jewel", the Fullwood Inn.
