Stayed a Saturday night and very happy with this hotel. Had booked a double room but, as we checked in early, it wasn't ready and the receptionist allocated us a family room, as we needed to change and leave quickly. The room was ideal - spotlessly clean and with all facilities needed for short stopover. Didn't eat in the hotel but there is a small Costa Coffee shop in the lobby for coffee and croisants etc (not open on Sundays).

We asked for a room at the rear, as we were concerned about any possible city centre noise on a Saturday night. We got a rear room but the area was very quiet anyway, as there's no nightclubs or bars in the local area.

The desk staff were very helpful throughout, even to the point of checking us in to our flight home at 1:30 am in the morning after we had returned from function!

Hotel is very secure, as you need your door card to get into the lobby at night, plus you need it to get on to your hotel floor, via access doors outside lifts and stairs, so no chance of unwanted visitors roaming the hotel at night.

Location is very good, easy 7-10 minutes walk to rail station, depending on your route. We didn't have a car, so can't comment on the parking. Co-op food store just across the road for snacks or sandwiches.

If we had to spend a few nights in Sheffield again, I would have no hesitation in booking here again, as it was much better than many upscale hotels we've stayed in.

Room was not clean, the noise from outside and the staff was really loud and I couldn't sleep. The food was poor I wouldn't have fed it to my dog. The receptionist was really quite rude and continued her conversation with a colleague and ignored me.

We spent two nights - Saturday and Sunday - at this hotel. There were some negative points to our stay. (1) We had booked a triple room (2 adults, one child) but on going up to our room (no-one accompanying, no porterage) we were mystified to find only a double bed. We discovered some sort of thin bed-base that pulled out from beneath the bed, but that seemed clearly unsatisfactory. We contacted the reception and they arranged for the settee to be made into a bed for our daughter while we went out. But it was disappointing that the hotel staff hadn't set up the triple room for our arrival, and doubly disappointing that the hotel did not provide the three beds one would expect when booking a triple room. (2) A second big issue was car access and parking. To an extent this isn't the hotel's fault. Driving a car in and around the centre of Sheffield is an absolute nightmare. But the hotel expects customers to use an NCP car-park which is literally round the corner (and to pay for this, though it has a discount arrangement which makes the overnight cost £5.60); finding this car park is something of an achievement itself. Furthermore, it has only limited hours of opening at weekend, particularly on Sundays, so we were forced to use another NCP car-park nearby, recommended by the hotel. Although this car-park was said to be "5 minutes walk" away, the hotel staff were unable to give me (and another hotel guest - a bemused visiting Canadian who had the same problem at the same time) remotely clear instructions about how to drive there. It turned out we had to head several miles out of Sheffield towards the M1, along a ring road, and back in again, to reach this car-park, which was only a quarter mile away from where we started! I felt sorry for the reception staff - the management (which seemed non-existent) should give them clear instructions to give to customers, and there should be clear maps and written instructions for them to hand over. However, nothing really is going to reduce the fundamental issue of the hotel requiring its customers to use external commercial car parks in a car-unfriendly city. (3) Noise. In the early hours of Saturday morning there was shouting and slamming of doors in our corridor. The road outside too was noisy particularly because of public service vehicles using it at all hours. We had to keep the window closed to reduce the noise. (4) There's no air-conditioning. You can adjust the thermostat to increase the heat, but you can't cool it. You end up with a stuffy bedroom. (5) Cheapskate provision within the hotel bedroom: there were too few towels, soap etc. Toilet paper was down to half a roll. We had to ask for more. Tea service was meagre. (6) Range of satellite channels on TV much more limited than you might expect from reading the hotel's advertisements. (7) Breakfast so-so. Good if you like a full English breakfast. But no natural yoghurt; bowl of fresh fruit was limited in scope and lacked common fruits like grapefruit; fruit juices limited and poor quality. Coffee, which was available from an urn, was repulsive. English breakfast tea was only available in decaffeinated form.

Plus points: (1) friendly reception staff, who tried to be helpful, though they omitted to warn us that breakfast on Monday would finish much earlier than breakfast on Sunday; (2) very attentive and helpful breakfast staff and chef - so much so that when we arrived very late for breakfast on Monday, they put out all the breakfast things again, and the chef rustled up a full English for all of us; (3) generally clean hotel; (4) excellent location for walking into the city centre, very close to all the main attractions.

  • Liked — Close to city centre
  • Disliked — Poor car access and parking.
