“Enjoyable wedding & overnight stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

I attended a wedding at this hotel which was very enjoyable. The food was served quickly & efficiently to say how many were eating all at once. The food was piping hot. Particularly enjoyed the trio of desserts-tiramisu, raspberry panacotta & a chocolate mousse.
The hotel room and bathroom were tastefully decorated with everything I would have expected from a 4 star hotel. The only criticism I have is that the shower screen in room 14 did not have any sort of seal so water went all over the bathroom as the shower screen wouldn't stay over the bath and kept moving towards the sink. At breakfast coffee tea and toast was offered on arrival in the breakfast room. The cold buffet was mainly cereal's fruit & yoghurt. The hot food was served by the staff. I wasn't all that hungry so can't comment on the hot food. Previous reviews advise that the staff were unfriendly but this was not my experience.

On arrival reception staff were abrupt. Room 5, although well appointed is severely let down by its location above kitchens (and kitchen radio!) and staff entrance. Also the very loud kitchen extract right outside the window at 80dB (see photo) was very intrusive. There was also lines of cars and taxis under the bedroom window with engines running waiting from 11pm to 1am for guests from the function suites. In the morning the milkman arrived well before 6am and sang to himself loudly whilst delivering the milk to the kitchens underneath and chatted with staff arriving.
Dinner in the restaurant was excellent as was the waitress service, but it was let down by the loud music from the function suite drowning out the atmospheric restaurant music.
Breakfast was also very good. On leaving we mentioned the noise in the bedroom and the response from reception indicated that this was a common complaint but that nothing will be done.
We felt that weddings and functions clearly take priority and we had to fit in around them.

We came here for a family wedding. Lovely venue, lovely food. Unfriendly staff, cramped seating and very expensive drinks spoilt it a bit. The wedding itself was badly planned too, with lots of waiting in cramped areas.

We met our friends at this hotel today. They had come for a weekend break and invited us to join them for Sunday lunch. This is a beautiful country house hotel. It was quite busy for lunch but we got excellent service from the young lady in charge of our table. The food was amazing and beautifully cooked and served. We enjoyed the company and the lunch. Our waitress asked us if we would like our coffee and tea in the lounge so said we would. after 5 minutes she came back to say she had set it all out next to the fireplace. There was a large pot of tea and a pot of coffee and mints. It was very relaxing in the lounge and a great place for a catch up with our friends. They were staying overnight so we went with them to their room when it was ready and it was beautiful with a 4 poster bed.We willdefinately come back again for a weekend break. It was a lovely day outside and there were lots of people having afternoon tea which looked lovely but we were so full after our lovely lunch.

I have great expectations of Whitley Hall, having stayed many times over a number of years, but we were very disappointed on our last visit. The disappointment began when I tried to make a booking. The phone has always been answered quickly, but this time, I rang on three separate occasions during one morning without success. As I had to go out, I finally sent an email. 24 hours later there was still no reply to the email; as I wanted to book for lunch while we were there, I phoned and succeeded in getting through. Having booked for lunch, I mentioned not having an email reply for the 2-night stay. The person on the other end then told me that it was because I hadn't given an email address..............

In the past there has almost always been someone on the reception desk, but we found that there was rarely anyone on during our first evening and part of the next day, and somebody was usually waiting for attention at the desk when we passed; we joked with other people staying that a bell on the desk would be a good idea. Later on someone was more often to be found on the desk.

Staff were friendly as usual, breakfasts good and our room was comfortable. The duvet and extra cover were far too heavy and hot for the weather in August, and a separate sheet would have been welcome. We solved the problem half way through the first night by shaking the duvet down to the bottom of the duvet cover and sleeping with only the cover over us. Everything had been put right during the day, so we had the same shuffle again on the second night.

We wonder if the hotel has passed into other hands since our last stay, or whether standards will be back to normal when we stay there again, as we will - with fingers crossed.

I will review meals separately, as there were great differences between them.

This is an excellent, quiet and ancient retreat in a country haven outside Sheffield, but still convenient. It is old style and super quiet, all the way from its ancient reception through to the modern rooms with their bottle of bubbly and their carafe of port waiting in the supreme comfort of their rooms . The bar is quaint and comfortable as an old slipper and the young ladies serving everywhere are friendly and welcoming. For a meal I had a starter of crunchy covered quails egg with mascarpone cheese and some wonderful type of beetroot. It was mouth-watering with an after tang that cried out for more.
I then had the delicate medallions of sliced venison, white chocolate mashed potatoes, strangely nice and a cube of cooked and compressed sliced potatoes, reminiscent of my favourite Lyonnais potatoes. The side dishes of buttered asparagus and mange tout were delicious with this. The final cheeseboard of two English blues and a French brie with assorted seeded and dark biscuits was excellent, whilst finishing off the bottle of Beaujolais villages and this set me up for their excellent coffee with cream.
My good lady had some seared scallops to die for. Wow! why don’t they always taste like that? Her main dish was the house speciality chicken imbued with a wonderful smoky taste and finished with a trio of summer delights including a jelly, an ice cream and a summer pudding
We have been here before, yet again find we are surprised with the taste, style and quality here. Highly reliable luxury and rest and highly recommended as always in Trip Advisor

Room Tip: The extension out by the lake is excellent

I had a lovely stay at this hotel on a Friday evening. I had an upgraded room, which was decorated very well with an amazingly comfortable bed. My only criticism is the room was on the small size which was a little disappointing considering it was an upgraded room.

The grounds are lovely and were being well used by the wedding party & photographer who were at the hotel. It is worth noting this that as it is a lovely spot clearly there will be weddings and as a couple on our own it did mean there were limited places to sit/drink when the wedding parties were in the grounds. When the party returned to their private room for the party it was much better

We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening, but had a lovely breakfast in the morning.
