We went to The Angel for lunch today and took several relatives as a Christmas treat. I had the roast pork, three had roast beef and one had fish. The five clean plates showed how good the food was. One of the beef customers wanted the beef well done, one rare and one as it came. All declared the beef excellent. My roast pork superb. Service pleasant and efficient. All in all an experience we will repeat. Highly recommended.

Excellent meal excellent service. We booked an adult family birthday meal at the Angel after previously visiting the restaurant in the summer and enjoying a succulent steak. Once again we were not dissappointed by our choice of restaurant. We were greeted by a warm welcoming friendly atmosphere were the staff could not be more helpful. The food was excellent and nothing was to much trouble as one of the party asked to change his choice of potato. The staff were attentive to our needs but also giving us the right amount of space to enjoy our evening. The food was excellent and would certainly book again in the future. Thankyou

Having read all other reviews, we were very surprised and disappointed with our experience last night.
We arrived when doors opened at 6pm at which time the preparations for the evening were still in full swing. Portable heaters were set up in the conservatory, the door handle of the front door had given up (hence the door to the porch was open all night and let the water gush in, not to mention an unpleasant draft). The place was freezing cold and gave the impression of only recently opened (recent as in yesterday). One felt being in the way, a bit. Admittedly, the weather was atrocious but perhaps it would have made sense to try to warm the pub up prior to openingt? The beer was very average (one customer sent it back), the food also average at best (but pricey) which was in stark contrast to the Derwentwater Arms. The bill when arrived was wrong. Apparently, "everything was going off at the same time". The pub wasn't even busy. Can't understand what happened there and after all the happy and pleasant experiences at the Derwentwater I can only hope that this was their one off-night.

Having just read your review I was very disappointed and must apologize for your bad experience. On Thursday afternoon we were informed that the heating system was failing and was in need of repair, just before you arrived that the temporary heaters were delivered. I must admit we were very preoccupied with trying to get some heat into the pub as it minus four degrees and snowing sideways! (not to mention we are situated on top of a hill on the edge of the peak district). It was indeed cold and drafty but we were trying to rectify that by installing the heaters as soon as they arrived.
The front door is always pinned open as a message to customers that we are open (as do most public houses).
The beer returned by the customer was a real ale and the barrel had finished therefore we happily replaced the ale with a pint from a brand new barrel.
Malcolm takes pride in providing quality meals using fresh local ingredients and we both believe that are prices are similar to those we charged at the Derwentwater Arms.
I am sorry there was a mix up with the bills we always provide itemised bills for our customers to check, occasionally mistakes happen. I should have checked it myself before presenting it to you.
I would like to think this is a “one off” and can assure you we have now situated all heaters in the cold/drafty areas and the heating system is being repaired on Monday.
It’s a shame you felt so strongly to write this negative review and yet did not talk to me on Thursday so I could have explained and may be rectified the situation a little.

My husband and I had almost stopped eating out locally because the restaurants in the area seem to have reverted to plain old pub grub, mostly with a horrible soggy carvery on a Sunday. However, my faith in being able to get a delicious, affordable, well cooked and well presented meal, has now been restored! This is the first local restaurant where we have been able to get some amazing fish dishes cooked to perfection, and the specials board always has something for everyone and usually is truly special. Although it is advisable to book, we have usually been very lucky and managed to get a table, the staff are very friendly and accommodating. We have been back to the Angel quite a few times now and never had a bad meal or any cause for complaint, the food is always piping hot and no matter how busy they are, there is no delay in service. The restaurant has a lovely quaint and cosy feel, it is a wonderful stopping off place on the way back from a run out to the fantastic Derbyshire peak district.
