“What a lovely theatre!”
Review of Crucible Theatre

I couldn't spend seven months in Sheffield and not visit the home of snooker on television could I? So I bit the bullet in my last week here and went to see Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale (October 2013). It's a lovely theatre and the seating arrangement feels very intimate in relation to the performance. I've only ever been to one theatre that betters The Crucible in this respect - Salisbury Playhouse.

This was only my second visit since the Crucible had its major refurbishment a while ago - but in fact most of the resources went into the backstage and other hidden areas. The main auditorium, with minimal changes, remains somehow cosy and welcoming, partly because it isn't too big and the thrust stage comes right into the audience.

We went to a Shakespeare production which made creative use of the opportunities offered by the stage's flexibility. It was well produced and the acting was up to the challenge.

A minor disappointment was the 'programme', costing £3.50 - full of adverts, blurb about the cast etc., but very little about the play itself. And instead of a list of Characters as they appear in the play (or sorted into groups) we are given a list of actors in alphabetical order. Surely that could be done better.

That aside, we had a delightful experience and would encourage anyone who only knows the Crucible as a snooker venue to come along and enjoy.

One of my favourite theatres. Everyone is close to the stage and there is a real feeling of intimacy. Never seen a poor production here - the staging, production and acting are always top notch. Oddly, the areas outside the auditorium are less enticing. The carpet is an eye-watering red, and there is nowhere to sit except for the bar area - and then you feel honour-bound to buy a drink which you may not want. This evening I ended up perched on some steps reading the programme before going in.
