Owner description: Millhouses Park is located approximately 3 miles south-west of Sheffield City Centre. Part of the park was gifted by Earl Fitzwilliam & Marquis of Zetland in 1909, with the remainder purchased by Sheffield City Council. Recent improvements include the Splash! project, located on the site of the old swimming pool and lido and reintroduces water play into the park, many years after the lido was closed and filled in. It is an interactive play area designed to be both playful and educational with kit such as an Archimedes screw, hand pumps and see saws that pump water into a large snaking channel, where it can be dammed in several places before being scooped by a water wheel and fed into a recycling tank. The water then feeds the toilets, can be used to water plants and tops up the boating lake. The Fishway project has seen the old paddling pools filled in and converted into natural habitat that will allow fish such as trout to bypass the two weirs on the River Sheaf and move upstream to spawn. The design is very complex and incorporates rock pools, overhangs and resting places and mimics their natural habitat as much as possible. Relaxing whilst walking along the river and exercising not only yourself but your dog.
You can pop into the cafe for a hot drink to warm you up then continue through the park.

Nice to pop in for a breakfast sandwich, cup of tea or cake, etc. Good value, good service. Our order was forgotten on one occasion probably because they were so very busy, but the staff ensured we got extra drinks (for free) whilst we waited as they prepared our order. This won't put us off going again.

The park is missing what it used to do best; entertaining families throughout the better months. No great paddling area any more. The paths are unsafe to walk with toddlers, when lycra clad push bikers come sailing through in the arrogant selfish style that they do best. The youngsters play area is reasonably good & well designed, with plenty of climbing activities. The skate & free style bike park is a good spot for the teenagers. It just lacks some form of focal point & place to gather, like the old multi-tiered paddling area provided.

Hi there!

Thank you for your considered review. I'm sorry you miss the paddling pools - but they had fallen into a terrible state of disrepair - not being used for almost a full decade - and the Friends of Millhouses Park worked hard to raise funding to renovate the area and install the FISH PASS at the same time as replacing the paddling pools with the SPLASH WaterPlay area.

The park is now almost unrecognisable from it's former self with a regenerated play area, sporting facilities, skate area, fish pass, water play, sensory garden, basketball court, all-weather football pitch, outdoor gym and much, much more!

The Friends of Millhouses Park will continue to strive to improve the park - and we invite you to visit the park again and look at all the positive changes that have taken place.
