Owner description: Millhouses Park is located approximately 3 miles south-west of Sheffield City Centre. Part of the park was gifted by Earl Fitzwilliam & Marquis of Zetland in 1909, with the remainder purchased by Sheffield City Council. Recent improvements include the Splash! project, located on the site of the old swimming pool and lido and reintroduces water play into the park, many years after the lido was closed and filled in. It is an interactive play area designed to be both playful and educational with kit such as an Archimedes screw, hand pumps and see saws that pump water into a large snaking channel, where it can be dammed in several places before being scooped by a water wheel and fed into a recycling tank. The water then feeds the toilets, can be used to water plants and tops up the boating lake. The Fishway project has seen the old paddling pools filled in and converted into natural habitat that will allow fish such as trout to bypass the two weirs on the River Sheaf and move upstream to spawn. The design is very complex and incorporates rock pools, overhangs and resting places and mimics their natural habitat as much as possible. This park now lacks what was once a popular feature. There were paddling pools which my children and grandchildren used often in the summer. These have been filled in but there is provision for water play and there is play equipment for different age groups. it is quite a welll kept park with bowling greens and tennis courts.

Thanks for your review! Unfortunately the paddling pools were in a dreadful condition and couldn't be returned to use - hence the creation of the FISH PASS which is an amazing addition to the park. The SPLASH Waterplay area is much more in-keeping with today's expectations of a modern water-play area and the fish pass gives somewhere for people to paddle and take a peek under the rocks to see what creatures live there!
I'm sure you'll be back soon! Thanks for taking the time to write your review!

Have used this with the kids for years. It has just about everything from skate park to stream to play by.. boating lake, tennis courts and somewhere to play football. The woods leading up the hill are great for playing in. There is also a great cafe! What more do you want!

One of the best parks in Sheffield by far! The jewel of sheffield parks, I would say. We almost go into this park every time we pass by, its so beautiful. Mostly, we enjoy their basketball court very much. I just wish it wasn't so slippy! It is a very nice area to picnic in when the weathers good but just beware of where your kids kick the ball because each day, many balls fall into the river beside the sports area. I hoped there would be a plan to lower the number of lost balls but everytime I pass by, I still see tearful children as they see their footballs or basketballs wash away. Apart from that, it is a wonderful area to play ball in. It has a large area for football, rugby, cricket or just a normal game of catch! At the centre of this all, there is a large pool which you can rent little paddling boats to row paddle about in. The price is reasonable. It has a lot of weed in it though so if you have a toy RC motor boat, it isn't the best place to use it because you have to get the man in the waders if it gets stuck in the middle.

The water area for kids is a great idea and it keeps them busy while parents relax. We move on to the tennis courts. You get borrow rackets - I think, but I don't play much tennis...

I would definetly reccomend a visit on a nice day - great place to walk the dog too! Unfortunately, there is a fee for car parks.

Thanks for the review! I'm glad that you love visiting Millhouses Park and I'm sure you'd agree with me that fences along the river would stop balls going in the river, but would totally ruin the beautiful riverside walk! I hope you continue to visit the park - don't forget to say hello to the man in waders!!!

\This park used to be great but its sad state is so depressing. Unkempt areas and tatty ponds that used to be fantastic drawing people from all over the city!

Hi MerliesMum,

Sorry to hear you've not enjoyed your visit to the park today. The Friends of Millhouses Park have worked very hard over the past few years to develop the park for everyone's enjoyment.

Perhaps you could let us know in detail which ponds you saw that were tatty and where in the park was unkempt so that we can raise this with the council maintenance teams?

You can contact us on our website by using the 'Contact Us' link - the site address is at the top of this page and at all the entrances to the park.

Your review is valuable to us - I do hope we can help to improve things for you before your next visit.

Kind regards

Richard

Millhouses Park has to be one of the nicest parks to visit in Sheffield. Although you now have to pay for parking in the two car parks, (free on the road) I definately recommend a visit. Its a long flat area, with a large grassed area to play ball and let the kids run wild on. There are various amusement franchises like slides, bouncy castles and the like. The free kids playgrounds are amazing as is the new water playground attraction. There is an old fashioned boating lake on which you can hire boats/pedaloes at a reasonable rate. We then move onto the Cafe, the jewel in the crown. Food of all types is available, good quality. They also have a monthly Bistro night. I love this place.
