Loved this place. As a new resident of Sheffield I wanted to explore some of its history and this was the perfect place to do so.
Guys who were on duty were great. The engine is noisy but worth viewing.
Food available across the courtyard.
Will return here as I'm sure I've missed some of the details.
Walking round the block is interesting, one moves from student flats to gentrified cafés and apartments. Keep walking and you'll find buildings that look as if they should be condemned and used sonkys on the floor!

From seeing a Bessemer Converter for the first time (sad that something so intimately related to flame and heat is rusting in the rain, but it is HUGE) to the tiny scissors made for the Great Exhibition, this is exactly the Museum I was hoping for. Given the sheer size of some of the pieces, it has a good selection of items made in Sheffield, plus the machinery used to make them, and reasonably good interpretative displays. Do schedule your visit to see the River Don engine (largest working engine in Europe) in steam, it's fabulous! I was not expecting the Hawley Gallery to be enthralling, but the Century and Millennium knives should not be missed.

The Museum shop is small but well stocked with nice stuff made in Sheffield, a pleasant change from the average shop, and a nice selection of books, too. Visit the Museum then, with an understanding of the history of Kelham Island, stroll around the area and think about what it meant to Sheffield and to Britain.

Its got everything you would want in a museum of this kind. The only grumble would be that its not open 7 days a week as I'm sure its missing out on a lot of visitors.

Its been quite some time since I last visited this museum, but it wont be such a long time until the next visit. My 6 year old grand daughter loved it all and the staff were really informative and friendly. well done to all for making this place a great place to visit.
