I've been coming here since I was a chlld - my auntie had a house on Whirlowdale Road, backing onto the woods. This must be the most wonderful piece of publicly owned and publicly accessible, well tended, woodland in any area of urban Britain. A wonderful thing for the local residents and visitors alike. Must be almost 2 miles long - reaching nearly as far as Dore village - and approx. half a mile wide. Network of footpaths and some signage. You can spend all day here and enjoy wandering around, picnicking, etc. etc.

Sheffield is the greenest city in the UK by a considerable margin, and the ancient Ecclesall Woods provide 340 acres of that greenery,a huge area considering that the location is only four miles from the city centre.
The woods are effectively divided into three sections, being intersected by Whirlowdale Road and Abbey Lane, and these roads provide ample parking for visitors.
A walk through the woods could include a visit to the sawmill, or the nearby Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet or Whirlowbrook Hall and park that are located at opposite ends of the woods.
Also close by is Millhouses Park with an excellent park cafe for refreshments.

We visited Ecclesall Woods for the first time last Saturday morning, having arrived in Sheffield on Friday afternoon. We took our two grandchildren, Bethany 8 and Thomas 10 and parked the car on Abbey Road. The weather was glorious, the sun complimenting the snowy paths and icy trunks over the little streams. We saw lots of robins and blackbirds and heard the song of a variety of birds, but were unable to identify. The children loved tracking the horses hooves, dog paws and footsteps. Thomas had recently watched the video of Wind in the Willows and was desperate to find Badger's house under a tree - he diligently dug for a scraper. I explained that there were probably badgers living in the wood but that they only came out when it was dark. He then asked if he could get permission from mummy to spend the night in Ecclesall Woods, with Grandma, in the event he might see them - how lovely the world of the child. As a matter of interest, does anyone know if there are badger sets in the woods?

Grandpa walks with a limp following a stroke, and although we all enjoyed it thoroughly, I think we should have taken more notice of the signposts, as it was a little long for him.

We have promised to take the children again - any further information about the woods and their trees, birds and animals would be welcome.
