Average rooms, soulless and noisy. We stayed in the Annex and were woken countless times by other residents slamming doors and shouting in hallways. Hot water very slow to come through and tiled floors very cold in bathrooms. Plenty of pillows but a spare blanket would have been welcome. Rooms clean if sparse.
Breakfast also sparse continental style....for the money we wouldn't recommend.

Stayed in Room 11 this time, probably the best room in the house. It is clear that further improvements have been made since our last visit and customer care continues at the same level with every member of staff welcoming and helpful. For the prices charged this establishment provides exceptional value for money.

We stayed three nights and ate every night in the hotel and were very pleased with the food. If I were to level any criticism it would be that the kitchen seemed a little slow but the quality received made up for that and waiting staff could not have been more pleasant.

Finishing each evening with a couple of drinks in front of a roaring log fire was the perfect way to relax.

Room Tip: When booking check the rooms available, it is often possible to book the larger quad rooms at the sa...

Been twice to eat First time they gave our our pre booked table away and we had to wait for half hour. To be fair the owner/ manager offered us s free drink to try and make amends.second and last visit was appalling Duty manager , not the one above was rude aggressive threatening inflexible. We eat out a lot but won't go back . A disgrace

Myself and my Husband have just returned from a one night stay here, whilst the pub is ok, it's not fantastic , the accommodation is rubbish.
We stayed in Room 5. Check in was a bit strange but it is a pub , maybe a proper reception area would be good but it's so crammed in the bar area I doubt this would work ,
When we arrived we had had really heavy snow so it looked beautiful , but in the foyer was a huge leak coming through the beams that was really bad, I felt sorry for the Staff who were constantly emptying buckets of water, not a great welcome really.
When we entered Room 5 I was struck by the smell of damp , but in the bathroom was mould all over the ceiling which was causing it.
The carpet was dirty and at the very least needed a good Hoover , the housekeeping standards were really poor , coupled with a towel rail hanging off the wall and the ludicrously sized T V (about 12 inches) , I felt this was rubbish value for money at £69 .00 .
I was glad we had only booked one night .
We were told the breakfast was continental so we never bothered with it and checked out early.
On the plus side , due to the double glazing it really is quiet .
All in all such a shame as these buildings are beautiful and with a bit of care and attention to detail , coupled with higher cleanliness , these rooms could be beautiful .
We did not eat in the pub as we have a Vintage inn locally and wanted to try different food , we ate at The George at Hathersage which was lovely .

Room Tip: Don't choose Room 5

brilliant value for a large family room and breakfast. Got this room for 3people and it was £25, well worth it! Lovely location and friendly welcoming staff. Looking forward to going back in the summer.

I have eaten at the Fox house on quite a few occasions a while back and found it very nice. However, I had lunch there today with my partner and the experience was less than satisfactory. It took 15/20 minutes to actually order for a start (it was midweek). We ordered two bowls of soup and a sandwich. We waited 45 minutes for this to arrive. When it did come it was the smallest bowl of soup I have every been served in a restaurant. The one slice of bread on the side was not fresh either. I was left hungry (I am 5 foot 2 and not overweight!). We ordered coffee afterwards (We had to stay as I needed to feed my 4 month old son) which took a good ten minutes to make and there was no queue at that point. My partner then went to change our son in the disabled toilet. He found the bin over flowing with nappies.

I would not recommend this pub anymore which is a real shame. I heard several others complaining whilst I was there. The service is incredibly slow and the food disappointing.

As we were working in Sheffield on New Years Eve, booked a meal at The Fox House on the way back. Wanted a room too, but they were already all gone at the time of booking back in September. The Fox House has long been a favourite of ours. Have eaten there many times over the past ten years, but last night was even more excellent than usual. The place was packed as you would expect at this season, but the staff were as friendly as ever, the service exceptional, and the atmosphere delightful. The 4 course meal was chosen in advance. Mine consisted of scallops and prawns in a tangy herby sauce with toasted foccacia, champagne sorbet, salmon with a dill sauce, spinach and bubble and squeak cake, followed by Sussex Pond Pudding. The pud was a refreshing departure from the usual. My companion who, unlike me, is a carnivore, started with rilettes with quince, and followed with roasted belly pork with a good selection of veg. The whole cost of the meal including three drinks was only £61. Can't wait for the next visit.
