We stayed at the Fox House for two nights with friends in November. The pub is really great, cosy, and with great staff. The dining aspect of the pub is also great, we had two very good meals with great wine and friendly service. What let our trip down was the standard of accommodation.
It should be noted that the rooms are not really run by the hotel - they're managed by a different company - Innkeeper's Lodge - who, in my opinion, the Fox House should part ways with as there is such a disparity between the standard of the two halves of the business. The rooms smelled of damp, there was visible mould on the ceilings in our room which had obviously been painted over and then grown through again; rather than been treated.
The decor is not dissimilar to that of a 1990s city centre budget hotel chain, rather than the characterful decor of the pub. And, though the rooms are not expensive so we wouldn't expect luxuries, the hand wash in the bathroom was a bottle of tesco value hand wash and in the shower was a half-used bottle of radox.
Finally, on our last night, we were kept up most of the night by rustling, gnawing and scratching. The staff (who were really lovely and helpful throughout) speculated that it was a squirrel but we suspect mice. Not ideal. As we left, the staff were already looking for the cause so hopefully the matter will soon be resolved.
If the standard of accommodation matched the standards of the pub then I would whole-heatedly recommend staying here. As it stands, I would recommend the pub for a drink and a meal but don't expect to be as satisfied when you retire for the night.

We go to Sheffield about once a year and have stayed in various hotels and been satisfied but this hotel ticked all the boxes in every department.
Friendly helpful staff, clean and very comfortable rooms. Beds that were like soft down and pillows that positively cradled your head.
We arrived in the middle of a very busy Sunday lunch and the place was packed out with at least a 2 hour wait for table. Jacqie went out of her way to sort the room and a made us feel very welcome, while we waited. No drama just good professional attitude, along with a willingness to have a chat.
We have found the gem we were looking for and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel be it for a one night or a week. Bags of character, Brilliant!

Room Tip: When making a booking be sure to reserve a table for dinner as they get very busy.....

The Fox House is one of those nice country pubs that kept with some of the old things ( big old fire next to the bar ) and the rest brought into the 21st century, the food was great, couldnt fault it really.
we have stayed at the pub before and they was outstanding, leave the car in the car park and drinks and diner with friends or as a couple and go back to your room, Fantastic.

We took two rooms for three nights, one occupied by my wife and I and the other by two elderly relatives. Looking at the prices in advance I was a little concerned at what I would find but had no reason to be. Both rooms were very spacious, clean and well maintained and the staff could not have been more helpful. Right beside a busy road, soundproofing was excellent and there was no problem with traffic noise. This is an old building and one of the features of wooden floor boards, beams and all the other character features is that they creak a little so expect to hear some movement in other rooms. As the rooms were separated from the main building there is no concern about disturbance from elsewhere.

I contacted the hotel in advance and our elderly relatives were given a ground floor room handy for parking and for the main hotel. A feature of the main building is all the small flights of steps to get about. Despite one of our relatives having some difficulty on her feet, this did not cause any undue problems and the efforts of the staff ensured that any difficulty was minimised.

We ate two nights out of the three in the hotel restaurant, a recommendation in itself. The food was well prepared and presented and again the staff could not have been more helpful or attentive. Every effort was made to accommodate two elderly ladies who can be a little difficult at times and they have raved about the hotel since their return home.

At the end of each day it was very welcome to be able to enjoy a relaxing drink in a comfortable armchair in front of a log fire in the very comfortable bar area. Everything has been done to maintain the character feel of the building while providing all modern amenities and it has been done to a very high standard.

This is a character building providing excellent facilities in a beautiful part of the country but what really made our stay special was the staff. Full marks to Jacquie and her team.

Room Tip: If you have any special needs contact the hotel in advance and they will do everything reasonable to...

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for just one night but what a pleasurable experience. We were greeted by " John" in the cosy bar area who showed us to our room for the night - Room 10. And what a pleasant surprise . So spacious and warm. The bathroom was one of the most luxurious I had seen in any hotel with double walk in shower. The bed was soft and exceptionally clean with gleaming white linen. The large oak beams gave the room added character. We settled in and didn't want to leave for our evening meal. We didn't use the hotel restaurant but tried the Toby Carvery just 4 miles away. We retired to our beautiful accommodation at the innkeepers lodge and enjoyed a good nights sleep. My friend awoke the following morning for an enjoyable 5 mile cross country jog. I made the most of a luxurious hot shower and coffee facilities. We then enjoyed the welcome hearty continental breakfast in the bar area. This was a charming experience and great value for money, costing half the price of many inferior hotels in the UK - just £59 for B & B for two of us - what a bargain. We shall certainly stay here again if we are ever in the beautiful Peak District . Mike ( Brighton)

Room Tip: You would love room 10 - spacious clean and quiet.

My 76 year old Mum wanted to revisit Padley Gorge. It had been over 20 years since her last visit and although she has seen much of the world its still her favourite location. I booked the Fox House online for its great value and close distance to the gorge. Prior to departure I looked at Trip Advisor and was very concerned on the journey from Suffolk about what we would find. I am pleased to report from the moment we arrived to departure the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. We were offered a choice of two rooms and went for sharing family room 11. The room was clean, warm and really spacious, even with the comfy double sofa bed out. The bathroom was clean and well stocked with towels, toilet roll and soap. The TV was very small with slight intermittent reception problems but we didn't go to watch TV and were happy to just catch up on some of the news. An earlier review complained of NO hairdryer, we had one. We were also supplied with more tea, coffee & milk than I have found in the best hotels. Menu's were in the room so we had time to choose before going over to the restuarant, with so much choice on the menu that helped! The Vintage Inn chain food was OK, not fantastic but excellent value with two starters and mains plus a drink each coming to £30. The continental breakfast had a wide variety to help yourself from with a friendly reception and guidance from one of the staff.
Our visit to the Peak District was just one night but we had time to take in the Outdoor shops in Hathersage, take a stroll along part of Padley Gorge, breath in the wonderful view from Monsal Head and pop into a craft shop outside Bakewell before heading home. The Peak District is wonderful and good for your soul even if only for a day. We will definitely try to fit in another visit and stay at the Fox House again sometime soon.
