i have dined at la mama a number of times most recently monday 04th of this month and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, the staff are friendly and attentive and the food is great! As a vegetarian i am often disappointed with the selection of food i can eat, however the menu at la mama offers a huge range of dishes almost half the menu is suitable for vegetarians. They also have a great offer 4 tapas for £12 all night on mondays. I will definately be coming again soon. Highly recommended !

while this was for most of us our first exprience it will definitely be our last.... we had a table booked for my sisters birthday for a party of 9 ... on being presented the tapas we were pretty taken a back by the price of each tapas dish which averaged around 5/6£ and advised that you should order on average around 3/5 dishes thats £25 for 5 tiny dishes of food more than a 3 course meal... we were told of the specials board and from this 3 of us decided on the chicken paella which on the board was advertised at £14.95 made up to how ever many people wanted the dish ... when the paelle arrived it was a large paella dish full of rice broad beans and green beans??? is this a STAPLE of paella? and very little chicken, between the 3 of us we each noted that we had 2-3 small chunks of chicken, there was very little seasoning and flavour if any .. parts of the rice were uncooked and all together not pleasent... another member of the party had the fish platter and a dish was missing. when the member of staff came over to clear the table it was mentioned that we were unhappy with the quality of the paelle dish and the missing tapas dish, this was rectified and a free drink was offered for the unsatisfactory paella which we accepted considering the dish was only £14.95...o how wrong we were ... when the bill arrived which was a whooping £270 we were absolutely disgusted and in shock to discover the paella was in fact a massive £44.95... (for a pan of rice) i immdiately took this up with a member of staff and was met by a rude and unhelpful attitude as she proceeded to be only interested in counting the huge amount of money we'd just left .. the chef informed me there was 2 chicken breasts in the dish so for almost 50£ we hadnt even been treat to a breast each ... if there was 2 breasts they must have been the smallest in world... i was then interrupted and spoke to like i was in the wrong by some woman at the bar who had absolutely nothing to do with what was happening and i assumed was just a friend of the people who work there, she informed me she did work there but just not on that night so why she got involved is beyond me... the least the management could have offerered us was to half the bill of the paella and aologised... but no... nothing just a load of verbal and attitude... i myself spoke out of term but only as a result of the bad service!!! i suggest they get some customer service for the staff and price the dishes up on the specials board instead of misleading customers with the price tag of £14.95 for a dish that was in fact £44.95! WONT BE RETURNING AND CERTAINLY WONT BE RECOMMENDING THIS PLACE oh and for the trouble 3 of us were ill the next day 2 with sickness and 1 with tummy upset!

Thank you for your response to your recent visit to La Mama. In reply to your review i would like to state a number of facts regarding your meal:

We are very proud of our Latin American and Spanish origins and serve to all of our customers authentic, traditional Latin food. We are very happy with the selection of Tapas dishes we serve and feel these fully represent our Latin roots. Our Tapas dishes range in price from £1.95 to £6.45. The most expensive Tapas reflect the ingredients, most notably meat and fish. The average price of our Tapas is £4.50 per dish. The range in price of our Tapas means you can eat in accordance with how much you would like to spend. We recommend 3 to 4 Tapas per person meaning an average meal cost of £12 to £15. On your visit you ordered the most expensive Tapas dishes.

Tapas is social food and is great to share amongst family or friends - unfortunately this was not the case with your party.

With regards to the Paella, you ordered a Valencian Paella. This is arguably the most authentic and traditional of all Spanish Paella's. The staple ingredients of a Valencian Paella are chicken (or meat), green vegetables and beans. This is indeed what you received. You were asked twice if you liked the Paella to which you and your party replied agreeably.

The Paella is indeed £14.95 per person. You and your party were indeed informed of this twice before ordering a large Paella for 3 people. You were fully aware of the price for 3 people sharing.

The large majority of our customers are positive in review of the restaurant both in house or on forums such as this. In the event of any dissatisfaction customers are polite and considered - we always take on board customer comments to improve our service.

There is a means and a way to express your dissatisfaction.

Your attitude on the night and particularly at the end of the evening was of overt aggression towards myself and my staff. Your intimidating, threatening manner was inexcusable as was your persistent swearing. On the evening I had junior members of staff working (18 - 21 years). Your outburst caused our youngest member of staff to have a near panic attack.

We will always accommodate customers who may feel they have not enjoyed a visit to La Mama for whatever reason. However your behaviour simply is not acceptable in a public restaurant, threatening staff and upsetting other customers.

We recently visited La Mama and we weren't disappointed. Firstly, the staff were friendly and helpful with the menu. The choice was so different to the usual - the ownership and kitchen is Chilean/Spanish and as well as the standards there were many traditional Chilean dishes to try. This made choosing difficult but refreshing. A great plus point for us was that each hot choice was served hot in warmed dishes - this is so often not the case in some places.

The dessert menu is admittedly short but the almond cake and brownie were gorgeous.

A good selection of beers and wines are available and the espresso was excellent. It would be a great place for a party - we will be back!

I feel compelled to write having read a rather negative review of La Mama by Murairwa.
My husband and I have been to La Mama on a number of occasions and have always had a very positive experience. The staff are most professional and the food of the highest quality. Sometimes it is quiet, which is to be expected, but we have also dined there when it has been very busy and we have always received excellent service. Our son is a fine dining chef who has worked in a number of Michelin Star Restaurants. He rates La Mamas highly as an excellent example of good food prepared from fresh ingredients, locally sourced, served with the attention to detail you would expect from a well respected family run restaurant. Well done Danny for your considered reply to Murairwa's rather inarticulate report of their evening, I would encourage anyone reading this to go and make up your own mind. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Great choice of foods and very friendly staff. Booked at very short notice based on internet reviews and we were not disappointed.
