“A lovely unexpected find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2012

After deciding last minute to go out for tea we headed down to London Road to see what food options were available and randomly picked Thai Punna. Although empty due to the time we went, it was a lovely clean restaurant with a friendly hostess. There is a vast menu with choices suitable for almost any one, and the prices range from £4 - £8 for most dishes. We had a sharing starter that was delicious and each had a main course. The food was lovely and arrived quickly and the portion sizes are very generous, we had that much they even boxed what we hadnt managed to eat. Would definately go again!

“It only takes one person to spoil it all...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2012

Sheffield, it has to be said, is a quirky place when it comes to eating out. There is practically nowhere that can lay claim to being truly top-drawer, in-your-face fine dining. Michelin stars are the kind of thing only amateur astronomers might chance to see around here. Come to think of it, you'd probably need the Hubble telescope to spot one.

There's a fair sprinkling of Indian and Italian (the stunningly authentic Vito's being by far the pick of the pasta parade).

But for some reason there is an embarrassment of Thai restaurants. Head anywhere near London Road or Ecclesall Road and you are practically falling over them. I don't know the exact numbers, but Bangkok must be in serious peril of being supplanted as the home of the hot stuff. One can imagine the redundant furnaces of the once great steel industry now overflowing with tom yoong gang as the city emerges to its chili-fuelled new dawn.

So with a fair bit of competition around, you would have thought the various restaurants might be anxious to please customers, right? Sadly, no.

We had been fairly regular diners at Thai punna for a year or two and always found it reasonably-priced, friendly and the food pretty good.

And then there came a new front of house. The person in question had clearly missed the bit in the training course about the notion of welcoming diners. For all the world, she was a kind of Thai Rosa Kleb, only without the humour.

"Have you booked?" she barked, guarding the portal to the 20 per cent full restaurant. For our effrontery is asking to be admitted having failed to send advance warning, we were shunted to the gloomiest table in the place. It was small too, barely big enough to stand a bottle of Thai beer on. Except the beer wasn't forthcoming. Nor was anything else. So I got up and went to the counter to ask for some drinks.

Then they arrived. No, not the beers. The other customers. There were four of them, although the mere sight of one would have been enough to terrify a crack tank regiment into panic and retreat.

They looked rather like the inhabitants of the post-nuclear desert world in the Mad Max films. The collection of tattoos was compehensive. Clearly, grevious bodily harm would be the lot of anyone who so much as sneezed in their direction. And where, in a void of 25 or so empty tables, were they being allocated seats? Yep. Right next to us.

Ten minutes later, we were miraculously still alive, but with no menus. And we decided we had had enough of being ignored. We got up and left. on the way out, I offered a bankote to mine host. "That should cover the drinks" I said.

She took the note unmoved and put it in the till without so much as a word of curiousity as to why we were leaving.

We were done with the Thai Punna. If there is a plus side, leaving as we did was I suppose preferable to being eaten by the inhabitants of the next table.

But next time we'll try somewhere different.

“Loved it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2012

Got the Living Social voucher - it was top notch food as I'm concerned, had Pat Prik Pao for mains & egg fried rice and loved it...my mate had Pat Prik Tai Dam and he kept licking his spoon after...definately going back at some point. For me the food was fresh and had great flavours...only fault I had was when I got the bill for the starters as got charged £6.50 each for the mixed appetizer when the menu deceives and looks as though £6.50 is for two people (as menu says for two people).

Happy to pay all the same as very satisfied...from S35 area.
