“Everything spot-on, perfect weekend hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2011

After searching for a hotel far enough out the city center to escape the noise but near enough to walk, we chose the Premier Inn, St Mary's Gate.
Really pleased we did as everything really was spot-on. Even though we arrived more than 2 hours before check-in the receptionist discovered the room was actually ready and allowed us to check in early. One thing that really stands out is the friendliness and helpfullness of all the staff we encountered.
We stayed on the top floor and had great views over Sheffield. The room was no-frills but perfectly adequate for a short stay. Everything looked as new from the furniture, bedding and carpet and I can honestly say we've never stayed at a hotel so immacculately clean. The housekeeping staff do a fantastic job here. Same with the restaurant, great breakfast with everything you could possibly want to start your day. We had dinner one night and it was really good, plenty of choice and in a nice setting.
Security is also good, your door card is required for hotel access on an evening and also to the corridor your room is on.
When I return to Sheffield I would book this hotel again without hesitation.

Room great; very clean, warm and spacious. Hotel quiet but only 10 min walk to city centre. Lovely looking bar/eating area. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful. It was a bargain price too!

The location of the hotel was ideal for my needs, and the underground car park meant I could leave my car there safely for the duration of my stay. All the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and the room was clean and surprisingly quiet - I slept well every night.
I didn't eat at the hotel, but the bar area was comfortable - I would definitely stay again!

I booked my room here at the excellent promotional rate of £29 per night, though it wasn't until just before I travelled to Sheffield that I discovered that I'd booked the "wrong" hotel, having intended to book the other Premier Inn, situated in Angel Street in the City Centre.

This Hotel is situated on the edge of the City Centre, just off the A61, which effectively provides an Inner Ring Road, and is a new build, opened in January 2009, occupying a 12 storey building, with one basement level.

Reception and the Hotel bar and restaurant are on the third floor, accessible by a pair of lifts, one of which is designated as a fireman's lift, or stairs. The ground floor and basement are occupied by the car park, with meeting rooms on the first, second and fourth floors, with bedrooms from the fourth floor upwards.

All well and good you may think, except the lifts are notoriously unreliable. They were both working when I checked in, but by the time I got back from the city centre that evening one had broken down, and by breakfast time the day after the other had failed as well, which wasn't all that fun as my room was on the sixth floor. I feel sorry for the Housekeeping staff and anyone up on the higher floors.

Considering how new the Hotel is, for both lifts to break down at the same time (a seemingly regular occurrence judging by other reviews) is totally unacceptable, hence the rating I've given. This is a great shame, as I would otherwise have been leaning towards a four or even a five, as everything else about the stay was great.

I booked this hotel via the website for two nights at just £29 a night. We arrived too early to check in, so left our bags with no problems, even though the central helpdesk for Premier Inn had told us this particular hotel didn't have this facility. The hotel is around 10 mins walk from the shops and 15 mins walk from the train station. We returned from shopping at teatime to check in and were taken through a self serve computerised system which I've never come across before. We were allocated a room which we found to be extremely cold. Within 30 seconds, an air con engineer was knocking on our door asking to see the unit in our room. When it became clear this wasn't a quick fix, we called down to reception for a solution, as it really was unbearably cold. After four phone calls and several promises from reception that a heater would be delivered, we'd had enough and asked to move rooms. It all seemed to be a lot of trouble and took considerably longer to resolve than it should have (one hour). We subsequently found out that the engineers had been on site for 3 weeks, which begs the question, why were we put in a room that they knew had been cold for 3 weeks?? Our second room was warm, comfortable and immaculately clean. Decent shower, sink was in the bedroom and not the bathroom which was a bit strange. Self service breakfast was good, but they need to make sure they keep replenishing the bread, croissants, bacon etc., as customers had to ask on a couple of occasions. We also had our evening meal there both nights and the food was really decent, with charming and attentive staff. Shame that the restaurant was one of the areas where the heating had gone off however. There also seemed to be problems with the lifts during our stay. Overall, for £29 a night it was a good hotel in the end, but come on Premier Inn, we, the customer are your life blood and you should be stepping up just a little bit more when a problem arises. We felt as though this was a brand new hotel which was still coping with new building teething problems.

This is a really great hotel in an excellent location. We managed to get a room for £29 per night which was a real bargain. Far superior to any Travelodge we have ever stayed in. Staff were professional, friendly and knowledgable. Hotel was exceptionally clean in all areas. Large bedroom had absolutely everything down to the last detail even to where lights, mirrors etc were positioned, flat screen tvs with loads of chanels, most comfortable bed we have ever had, no noise from outside or inside. We did not eat in the hotel as we like to savour local cuisine but it all looked very reasonable and appetising. Only a 5 minute walk from the town centre with free underground parking. We usually stay at Kenwood Hall when we visit Sheffield but will now change to the Premier Inn as we cannot fault our stay in any way.
