“City Centre Catholic Cathedral and Concert Venue”

Nice atmosphere, despite being relatively modern. I've enjoyed many concerts here. Beware of the beggars at the entrance sometimes!

“A Catholic cathedral of outstanding beauty and prayerfulness”
Reviewed March 28, 2011

St Marie's RC Cathedral is one the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. Given that it is in the middle of a busy city centre it is quiet and peaceful. The large East window is magnificent and the statues and decorations in stonework are a tribute to the Victorian builders and stonemasons who did the work.
St Marie's may be down a side street but it is of equal status to the Anglican cathedral on the High Street, just not as visible. Older parts of the Anglican cathedral were the original parish church of St Peter prior to the Reformation. St Marie's was built in 1850 at a time when Sheffield was expanding, both in manufacturing and Catholicism.

“Sheffield's Second Cathedral”
Reviewed June 7, 2008

St Marie's is located in a side street in Sheffield, It is the catholic cathedral of the Diocese of Hallam.

It is a bit dark inside compared to the Anglican cathedral but still interesting. Its roof is decorated with the coats of arms of the nobles who protected the church in the time when catholicism was outlawed in Britain. The church has a special connection with the Duke of Norfolk. English martyrs names ar shown above the altar.
