“Excellent food in a warm environment”
Reviewed August 18, 2011

Almas is a little more expensive than most of Sheffield's Indian eateries but is well worth the extra - it is a restaurant , not just a curry house.

The choice on the menu is excellent as is the food.

I only have two criticisms - there is no draft beer and you have to be a contortionist to get in and out ogf the Gents.

“Wonderful Garlic Chilli Chicken”
Reviewed June 1, 2011

The GCC is the best you can get., you need to ask for it as it's not on the menu. The food and drink are pricey but well worth it. The head waiter/owner can appear off hand but actually he is very helpful and he and his staff provide excellent service. Beware It's not an end of the night after 10 pints of lager kinda place.

“The best Indian in 'the village'!”
Reviewed December 1, 2010

Ok so it's the only one in Dore Village and it is a bit expensive, but it serves up decent food and the staff are always welcoming and helpful, adapting dishes to suit requests.

Great for a takeaway - order food, go to pub across road, pick up food! A nice upmarket setting and atmosphere for a local curry house if you fancy a nice night out.

While we Dore residents are proud of our villagey feel, Almas is not worth venturing out to Dore if you're anywhere close to Abbeydale or Sharrow restaurants.

“Decent food - but expensive and service comes with an attitude!”
Reviewed June 1, 2010

According to some reports, the Sheffield suburb (or "village" as locals prefer it to be known) of Dore, has some of the highest earners per captia anywhere in Europe. It is a very well to do area and is the home and haunt of famous footballers, Professors and other celebs. The latest rumour is that a certain Katy Price will also soon be a resident too. So, money, in this area, is not in short supply. And boy how the owners of Alma's know it!

Alma's recently (in past couple of years) underwent a facelift, renaming itself as a "brasserie" and refurbing its interior to give a more upmarket feel. It didn't miss the opportunity either to refurbish its price list, upwards, to match. It introduced some eclectic dishes like "lamb shank" to the menu to give it a more upmarket kind of appeal.

I've never been over-impressed with the food here. It's good - don't get me wrong - but it's not outstanding and that's not really good enough when you are charging very high prices. The thing that spoils it most for me - and many others who I know have given it a wide berth for the same reason - is the attitude of the staff. On a recent occasion my wife visited with a group of ladies and it was almost like the restaurant were doing them a favour having them in there. One of them wanted to order a starter for the main course and another wanted to share a main course between them - they were told by the waiter/owner "I don't normally allow that". They were speechless! They also remarked on the size of the naan bread, which was about the size of a small side plate.

If you are enjoying a beer at one of the fine hostelries in the village of Dore and you want to wander no further than the village for a curry then this is very convenient and you will probably enjoy the food. But not the service, or the bill at the end of it.
