“Hidden away”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2012

Well it's not that hidden away if you know it is there abouts. You can just come accross it whilst wandering in the park in the sunshine! Nice surprise. Nothing to to much to realy get into, but it is freeee lol.

“Amazing Ruins, but Sadly Difficult to See!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2012

As the ruins are in a bit of a state, and considered dangerous, you can only peer down at them from above. I have heard talk safety work might be done so you can visit more closely and I really hope it is. In the meantime, the ruins are amazing to peer down at, but I wouldn't make a special visit just to see them. Forbury Gardens is just alongside though, so on a fine day it's a good place for a walk.

A haven in the middle of the town- well worth a visit for its history and atmosphere.

“Old Viking campsite”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2012

The grounds of the Abbey ruins are on the site of a Ancient Viking Campsite. Situated between the Rivers Kennet and the Thames, the site has gone through many many reincarnations. The Abbey is long gone now, the Reading Gaol (of Oscar Wilde infamy) stands on part of the area. There are a lot of informative boards standing posting of it's history. If you choose to walk around the site, you'll be lead out to the main roads and indadvertedly encompass the Gaol (which is operations and thus not open for tourists).

I'd highly recommend walking along the river and ending up in Forbury Gardens. Have an icecream and watch the world of Reading pass by.
