“Unspoilt remains”

Silchester Roman City Walls and Amphitheatre

The roman town is a good 20mins drive from Reading and 5mins from the car park. But it's worth it to have a walk around the walls of the old town. Being so remote it remains relatively unspoilt; there's no plastic walkway, gift shop, audio tour, or any other of the perfunctory tourist treats. When you're there you can see the enclosure of the town just as it was in Roman times. The highlight of the visit is standing in the amphitheatre, much of which remains intact. Be warned though, there are no toilet facilities there; if you need to go then you go as the Romans went!

I've visited Calleva a dozen times in the past 4 years and it never loses its majesty.

Fun to play "archaeologist for the day. No you can't actually get in the holes but you can look, touch and feel the artifacts that have been excavated. Recommend you visit on a sunny day and avoid rain. Short little hike from the car park to the site, but easily accessible.

Easy to find with good free parking make this perfect for a Sunday walk. The amphitheatre is particularly interesting and the walls have various information boards that help you picture what the area was like.

In truth there's not a great deal to actually see here, with the exception of the fairly impressive remains of the walls and the amphitheatre. However with a combination of the excellent interpretation boards around the (extensive) site, the audio guide you can download to your mobile from the site's website, and your own imagination, it's really brought to life how this town lived and worked in Roman and post-Roman times and its place in Roman Britain. It's a live archaeological site as well, so in the summer you can also watch the archaeologists and students at work continuing to excavate it. All in all it makes for a surprisingly interesting day out if the weather's good, with some healthy exercise thrown in!
