“Peaceful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

A great place to head to on a cycle ride from Reading, follow NCN 23 (Reading to Basingstoke route), which has a detour to Silchester. The ruins are quite large and will take you a while to walk around the walls. It is in a rural setting, with good views across the valley. No food facilities on site, but pubs/restruants nearby.

“Great Walking”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2012

Prior to you going you should read the Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff, it deatils Silchester and gives you a real context, although fictional. This place is brilliant and has a real feeling of lost souls and a time in our history. The O/S book for this ara covers a great 6 mile walk through woods and some slightly muddy fields.

“Lovely place for a walk”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 11, 2012

It's a lovely place for a walk around. Easy path with not too many ups and downs. Fascinating with lots of historic values, although our little one was more excited about some chickens he saw along the walk. Had to drive around a bit before we found a pub though for some lunch, there aren't any toilets around either.

“Roman History in the Heart of Hampshire”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2012

Wonderful walk around the top of the old walls; takes about an hour if you amble and read all the signs! Amazing archaeological dig going on this summer; eager volunteers happy to tell you what they've found. Recent blockbuster movie 'The Eagle' based on Rosemary Sutcliff's book set around here.
