“Not sure why people rave about this place”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

First we where seated near the entrance in full view of the chiller cabinet so it felt like we where eating in a shop and every time someone opened the door there was a cold draft right across the table, second the pie tasted like it had been microwaved not freshly made so for me that place is far to expensive for microwaved food

“Pie and gravy”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

Been here so many times and love the place. Particularly love the lady who reads out all the fresh pies that they have available. The pies are freshly made and contain really good quality meat. Recommend the steak and Stilton with chips and gravy washed down with a pint. Heaven. Please do look beyond the decor which is a little dated. You can even buy pies to cook at home.

“Pie Day Friday”
Reviewed October 14, 2013

Sweeney's Pie Shop is one of the best places to eat in Reading - great food and one of the few places in town with a bit of character. There's a refreshing lack of frills and the quick-fire way the old lady waitress reads the list of freshly made pies, the tables in the dungeon-like cellar and the fact that there is actually a barbers next door all add up to a genuinely hilarious eating experience. If you're lucky you may even get a table next to the washing machine.

“What more could you ask for?”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

Having been recommended to go to the Sweeney by Reading locals I went for saturday lunch and had the chili, chicken and chorizo pie, treacle tart and a pint of the on tap ale. The pie was delicious nothing burnt all wonderfully cooked and filled to the brim with meat and veg. The service is excellent and quick and the surroundings unique - little cubicles and seating areas squeezed in. The prices are good - £7 for pie and salad and I think £2 for side of lovely chips. Still full now and can even taste the lovely flavours 3 hours later. Will defo go back as there are some tempting pies on the menu ! The shop at the front serves excellent scotch eggs!

p.s. They are not all available at the same time, depends on the ones that have been baked!

“Roasts and Pies”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

I used to work opposite and have been eating at Sweeney Todds since they opened. The Pies are exceptional. Some uniquely good in the UK and a great range. They come with a salad or you can choose the full accompaniment. However they also do the best value roast meats in town. You can buy pies or very good slices of beef, ham etc to take home. I have bought pies for easy home catering for groups of guys. They love them. The secret of the great pies and roasts is the family butcher connection. (Vickers butchers in West St, Reading have a tradition for game and their home made sausages etc - One of the few places to buy goose fat for the finest Yorkshire puddings.) Sweeneys is always busy. The staff are true professionals and the wine and beers are well selected. It is also an old building with history and so a great place to take visitors. You can book the basement or other areas. It is a popular place for Christmas dinner.
