I have eaten here numerous times and never gone away disappointed. The food is fantastic, the service excellent and the atmosphere great. Highly recommendable, whatever the occasion. It's just a short walk from the Hexagon too, so a great option for theatre goers.

“Was expecting more...”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

After the rave reviews I'd heard about this restaurant I was slightly let down. I've been to Sardinia I was expecting to taste some authentic Sardinian dishes but it simply wasn't. However, the food isn't bad - it just isn't authentic and slightly better than average Italian fare.

Service was good, the crowd seemed to be mostly theatre goers (the Hexagon theatre is situated opposite) as the place emptied out all of a sudden which left us as only 1 of 2 tables by 7pm - so not much of an atmosphere of any kind!

In response to the comment about authenticity - the owner of Pepe Sale is from Sardinia and many of the dishes certainly are authentic Sardinian cuisine, including Pane Frattau, Spaghetti Bottarga, Pane Cottu, Malloreddos, Gulungiones, Seadas and slowly roasted suckling piglet. We also import the Pane Carasatu bread that we serve, directly from Sardinia, which is the typical bread of the Island; we make all the different types of pasta on the menu ourselves (except for spaghetti) and the majority of our wine list features wines from Sardinia.

“Great food and coped brilliantly with 75 people”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

Food was fresh and tasty, chicken with salmon stuffing worked remarkably well.
Service was friendly and efficient
Wines were served just right

The only minor issue is that the ceilings are a bit low and with alot of people in can get noisy

“The best in Reading”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

The food varies from merely excellent to truly wonderful. I've eaten here many times, and every time is a culinary experience to be relished. The food is beautifully cooked, and the Sardinian twist gives it a touch more zing than typical Italian restaurants can boast. The wine choice compliments the style of food on offer, and if you're not sure of what choice to make the charming staff will help you admirably, assuring a splendid evening out - or an unbelievably fair value pasta at lunchtime (£5.50) should you so choose. After all, in a town where you can pay £4.50 for a glorified sandwich, surely a fabulous pasta makes more sense? I heartily recommend Pepe Sale - it's not just great food, but a lovely experience to be had every time.

“Great food and good service”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

When we visited this restaurant on a Saturday evening we were warmly greeted and offered a choice of tables - a good start. The food was also really good with our Bass in a salt crust and Suckling Pig both delightful. Our choice of a window table was a mistake given the anti-social antics which go on outside, perhaps they should brick the windows in and paint a bright mural on the resulting wall instead?
