“Good Hotel, Central Location”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Made a last minute booking at the Malmaison in Reading, considered other local hotels such as Novotel (more expensive), Premier Inn (similar price), but decided on this one as it was close to the train station and appeared to have everything needed for an impromptu overnight stay on business. Booked a deal with a Superior double room with continental breakfast. The chap on reception was pleasant, efficient and very helpful. As noted by others, the hotel is quite dark, but this wasn't a problem for me. The room was modern, clean and comfortable; a good sized bathroom with bath and rain shower, and good toiletries on offer, and the large bed was great, with the dark blackout curtains meaning I wasn't woken at 5.00am as the sun came up! The evening meal in the Brasserie was a pleasant affair, not too crowded, served quickly by friendly staff, and a good choice of food available. I ordered just a main course, and was told this was likely to take about 30 minutes, so I decided to order a starter to nibble on in the meantime, but it turned out that my main meal arrived very quickly - the cynic in me may say this was a ploy to get me to order a starter - but nevertheless, the starter was very nice too, so I wasn't too troubled by this! Drinks were expensive, as expected in a good city centre hotel. Breakfast the next day was great, I upgraded to the full English for an extra £2 (it would be rude not to!) and it was worth it, very nice breakfast indeed which set me up for the busy day ahead. All in all, a good experience and somewhere I would stay again if all of the rooms are of the same quality.

as has been noted, the beds are ridiculously uncomfortable. Just no give at all. Had to double the duvet to sleep.
There is no gym. Not even a room with a treadmill.
There are stairs everywhere, so if you have mobility problems, this is a poor choice. When they ask if you want help with your luggage, say YES because there are 1-2 flights of 3-4 stairs on EVERY level and struggling with your cases is just silly.
Skip the continental breakfast option -- it's not worth it. A few pastries and some picked-over fruit is not good. And the house-made granola looks like birdseed and tastes about as appetizing!
Having said all that, the service was good, the staff friendly and helpful. The rooms were well-appointed and quiet.

I live in Reading and have been to Malmaison for dinner on a number of occasions whether it to take clients for a meal or the girl friend for a nice romantic dinner.

The food is of a high standard with an ample selection of tailored wine with the knowledge to match and the service 90% of the time is as you'd expect.

I fear the only way to sum up the restaurant is to simply say I've never had a bad meal or complaint and would recommend to many.

My only gripe is the tables and chairs used. If on a client meeting the chairs are too low in relation to the tables. If there with your loved one the tables are just a little too big to be able to make it a romantic experience. You end up talking loudly and you feel you are too distant from the other person.

We have stayed at this hotel many times over the last ten years but this is the first review I have actually written. Rooms have varied in size but without exception they are all very well appointed with good ensuites, lovely toileteries and the beds are among the most comfortable you will get anywhere with crisp white linen and good pillows. It was the old station hotel and has a railway theme throughout. We use it as a base for London if we don't actually want to stay in the city - car parking is easy (an NCP just around the corner where you get a reduction when staying at the hotel) - a minute walk to Reading main line station where there are trains about every 10 minutes to Paddington. It is also a good base if you want to visit Oxford, Windsor, Henley etc. Reading itself is a modern town with a good shopping centre and some decent retaurants, most of the chains are there including Cote, Jamie's etc which are situated in the riverside area. The bar at the hotel has a good atmosphere and their brasserie restaurant has a good menu with better than average food. Just one complaint we have is that the tables are too wide so you feel a long way from your partner which in our opinion spoils the intimacy a little. We have always experienced good service be it the restaurant, bar or reception.

Having stayed for one night I left leaving a few expensive toiletries in my room. It took me five attempts to get someone to call me back. All they could say was they couldn't locate my items. I know they were just thrown away and complete disregard for the cost of the items. I even email the very next day asking them to locate my things. No-one bothered to reply.

Very poor customer service.
