I was out with my friend walking along the Thames when we came across this quaint cafe. The owners (Lesley and Andrew) made us feel very welcome and we enjoyed a light lunch, tea and some delicious home made tiffin. The prices were very reasonable, especially for the service provided. I would certainly visit again .

Having read about Whittington’s Tea Barge on Tripadvisor it seemed to be a novel addition to the eateries in Reading and being listed as number 2 out of 292 restaurants in Reading it had to be good.
Being firmly placed on the restaurant list below number 1 Tutti Fruti Ice Cream Parlour in Reading Station and number 3 Myalacarte restaurant in Caversham just shows how diverse the selection of restaurants are and how they are rated on Tripadvisor.

The tea barge which also has a liquor license is moored adjacent to Christchurch Meadow car park, only holds 24 people and when I arrived with my wife it was full, but were lucky that somebody was just about to leave so got a table almost immediately. Tables and chairs are laid out on the river bank so more than 24 can be catered for if the weather is favourable ( or if we ever get a summer) and is an ideal location for a light lunch or high tea with a wide and varied choice of specialist teas and coffees. During the day they cater for family’s whilst moored on the river bank but they are due to start themed music evenings with sit down meals both, whilst moored and sailing up and down the river and you can hire the barge for private functions.

The food during the day is restricted to Omelettes, cakes, toasted sandwiches etc and what we had were very good and more than adequate with the added bonus that Andrew and Lesley make you feel so welcome that you just want to return again and again. Until the next time.

Proper leaf tea in proper teapots. Home made scones and self will bending cakes. A barge on the River Thames. This was about as eccentrically English as afternoon tea could get. Brilliantly friendly, great service and a picturesque location.

So at first thought you may have envisaged a narrow, cold and maybe even slightly damp option to stop for a well earned hot drink and tasty treat when in Reading.

In reality Andy and Lesley have created warm, friendly and very welcoming atmosphere aboard Whittington's Tea Barge. Their take on the traditional tea shop really has to be experienced, for not only are they wedded to using the very best suppliers but also manage to support local artisan producers from cake bakers to chutney makers.

If you just pop in for tea and cakes, stop for Andy's full English breakfasts, book for one of their special evenings or organise your own event - for work or a special occasion you will not be disappointed.
