It's not clear to me what Accor think they are doing allowing such a shabby hotel to be branded a Mercure. Granted it's not exactly an upscale brand in the chain but this example was truly sub-par. Torn carpets, horrible room, not sure it was really clear - complete rabbit warren inside - not clear how to get back to reception from 4th floor. Looked in at the bar thinking to have a drink, but it was dingy with no atmosphere. If you want to stay in an Accor hotel in Reading, choose the Ibis - at least that's honestly cheap.

I stayed there the night prior to the Reading half marathon and was really hoping to get a good night sleep. Unfortunately the building being relatively old and listed, they can't or haven't put any double glazing which meant I endured drunken antics from the next door bar and of people going through the street.
Otherwise I was in a very nice room.

I stayed one night at the St. George attracted by the history of the hotel and by convienient price. Still I felt that the hotel needs some refurbishing. One thing that I must point out is that I disliked the odour in in the hotel that I suppose came from the carpets. I understand the floors are old so the original flooring should be brought to surface to see the beauty of the floor pannels. Instead they are covered by carpet that has a strage odour .
Service was fine, I slept well and the place is very central near to many coffee shops and restaurants.

I had to stay here on a business trip, the bathroom was damp and mouldy and the shower did not work. It worked powerfully when turned down cold but as soon as I turned the temperature up it just slowed to quite literally a trickle of water. I found that if I turned the temp up extremeley slowly the water would come out a little bit more but just not enough to have a good shower. There was a crack right across the wall between the two windows too. I couldn't get the TV to work, then next morning I realised the aerial lead was not plugged into the wall socket. The hotel to give its due is an old building but is in serious need of renovation and cleaning! The floors are creaky, and there were alot of stairs. Be warned there are no lifts in this hotel. The breakfast was nice though and the bed comfortable, the iron worked well too.

Stayed here on a Saturday night as meeting friends who live in Reading. The lady on the reception was very obliging and helpful. The hotel is very clean and apparently recently refurbished but some parts still looked a bit in need of a spruce up. However, our room was clean and tidy and the bathroom spotless with tea and coffee facility, TV etc. Bed comfortable too. Location right in the middle of the town - next to the main shopping Centre so couldn't fault that. Lots of pubs and eating places abound. There is an excellent REAL ALE pub just over the road too.

Breakfast was plentiful, cold buffet and hot food on offer too. The waiter was very cheerful and attentive. Quality of the hot breakfast wasn't that great but still plenty of other stuff to eat and for the price we paid for the room we wouldn't complain. Would definitely recommend as a budget hotel for one or two nights.

On the positive as the previous reviewer stated it is in a very good location - next door to the Oracle shopping Centre and close to the station. I was given a twin room although asked for a double which wasnt a good start. The bed however was comfortable and room clean and usually equipped. Bathroom was a bit of a squeeze! Too many stairs, doors and corridors to get to the room - not easy! I ordered room service on both nights which was lovely on night 1 - penne pasta in a creamy sauce however I think the chef must have had a night off on the Thursday as the caesar sald couldnt possibly have been made by the same person - lettuce completely drowned by the sauce with deep fried chicken and deep fried baguette on the side - very disappointing. Nachos also tasted deep fried. Probably wouldnt choose to stay here again as positive on location not really enough

Lets start with the positives; it's near the shops... Well that's it really. On arrival we discovered that due to a mix up it had been booked for single occupancy. It cost an extra £20 ( total £109). Now there could be some extra cost in having two people in a room but I would suggest not £20 worth of expense. Maybe it was the breakfast? Definitely not, dried up egg cheap sausages the usual stale buffet. The coffee came from a machine and was pretty average. Most hotels charging £100 will provide better quality and service. Oh and on arrival we decided to get a glass of wine in the bar. £6-50 for a small glass of house red ( you know it's the sort of thing ASDA sells for £3-99 a bottle). There were two big screens showing football which wasn't exactly relaxing.
The room was too hot, no way of controlling it and sleep was near impossible. The noise outside went on until 3 ( and this was Thursday night, goodness knows what it's like at the weekend), the the alarms from nearby shops went off and finally the deliveries to the Oracle (next door) .
Would not recommend. There must be better places in Reading.

The hotel is situated in the centre of Reading so i guess as in most town centres there will be street noise.
I dont no which wine you had but our wines start from £4.75 for a 250ml glass and can assure you cannot be purchased in Asda
