Booked into the hotel by someone else as needed to be in Reading for a meeting (on short notice). Not sure whether the hotel is under a conservation order or they just haven't gotten around to extending the modern centre of Reading yet. It's OK. The room is basic and functional and seemed to have been recently refurbished. Could have been any where and was stripped of the outside character of the building. Don't confuse this hotel with other Mecures as it does seem to lack some of the style I have seen in this brand in France. Even their website seems to hide the fact that they belong to a brand. The bar/resturant/breakfast room serves for the small amount of people. There is a larger room at the end that seems to be the overflow and has the style of a box. The evening meal selction is limited but satisfactory. One redeeming fact was that they had a real ale. I found the hotel secure and quiet.

Breakfast was poor by comparison with similar standard hotels. Coffee was undrinkable. The choice was limited.

Would I stay here again? I would look elsewhere first and at a push yes.

One thing to note that if you turn right out of the hotel you come to a large modern riverside shopping/food/entertainment complex with a cinema. If I'd been with other I would have eaten there on the evening.

Room Tip: If you need a lift to get upstairs then choice is limited, ask before booking.

Great hotel if you come by train or bus. Very poor disabled access around the hotel (to be fair nothing else could be expected due to its age) My room was small, functional and tired. The ancient, probably grade 2 listed, windows didn't close properly and the secondary glazing was poor. Ok in the summer, at -2 in December not so charming.
The room overlook Starbucks, who seemed to get a delivery at 04:00, I know that because I heard everything.
The interior of the Hotel is drab and tired, the exterior really needs maintenance.
Breakfast was average, the coffee was awful it was from a machine.
I'd go back if everything else was full but to be honest I have stayed in better Premier Inns for less money.
Didn't bother with the Wifi or room internet as the lady in front of me when I was checking in was complaining about hers.
If you have a lot of luggage do not bother with this Hotel there are stair cases everywhere including outward opening doors at the top of stair cases. A true delight whilst holding 30Kgs of luggage balanced on a Victorian stair rising at a precarious angle.
There are references to Charles Dickens all over the hotel, that,s OK if you are providing a contrast to Dickensian England. Unfortunately in this hotel you are left with an impression that we haven't really come that far.

Room Tip: Do not get a room overlooking the street at the front.

Hotel well located in Central Reading near to shops, cinema, Hexagon and restaurants. This would have a downside if you wanted to park close by as the nearest car park is 10 minutes walk with luggage. Very good value weekend deal at this time of year. Room comfortable and quiet but not as spacious as some other Mercure hotels I enjoy. But adequate when travelling alone. Staff efficient and courteous.

This is a charming old building, although that does mean narrow winding staircases – not ideal if you’re travelling with a lot of luggage. Great central location, few minutes walk from station. Staff were excellent, nice restaurant.

Stayed in a standard room – cosy but well laid out. Bed was extremely soft, not comfy. Nice artwork on the walls, excellent desk, ironing board and trouser press in room. Bathroom was fine, with shower over bath. Relatively quiet.

The little details were missing though: all the chairs, curtains and lampshades had a large number of loose threads and looked past their best. The tissue box in the bathroom was empty, and the bathroom bin had not been emptied following the previous guests’ stay. Also at night the room was very gloomy, bedside lamps meant reading in bed was fine but the lack of desk or ceiling lamp meant it was almost too dim to work. Internet was fast but annoyingly you buy usage until 12 noon (£8), not for 24 hours like in most other hotels – so trying to get a day’s work done meant paying for the internet twice, even though I only used it for about 6 hours.

For an interesting hotel with a bit of character I would recommend. But for a sleeping and working then the Novotel is probably a better option.

Old hotel in desperate need of tlc
Dark corridors with random steps - dodgy to navigate with luggage and with timed lights
Bathroom lovely except screen door doesn't open so you have to get in shower and turn on to work it - cold for a few mins

Bedroom nice size but tatty furniture - note in welcome pack really off putting! Room service prompt limited choice and small portions

Internet charge - didn't work any way - alot of noise from street and creaky / banging from upstairs plus bed smelt of smoke

Breakfast a bit of a nightmare - dry bacon congealed scrambled egg pluscoffee from a machine - a charge for cafeteria ! 2 TVs blasting out and a mattress outside window - noisy noisy noisy - not a good way to start day

Staff nice especially new chap who delivered room service

We booked 6 weeks in advance and instead of a twin room received a double and a rock hard sofa bed - complained only to be advised we were given an upgrade to an executive room, funnily enough none of the things in an exec room existed in ours so a complaint has been made in writing. The hotel overall seemed ok - reception was friendly, bar extremely noisy and so ate out. Our room was rather cold as it was a large room and the hotel turned the heating off at midnight so we froze for most of the night when it was minus figures outside. Couldnt fault the location at all as it is right next to the Oracle and superb for a shopping break.

My room was booked by a Corporate Client for a 1 night stay.

It is generally OK, without being anything special. Good central location with pleasant array of nearby shops & restaurants. Parking is in nearby Queens Rd NCP - all very easy, but do need to know way to hotel (only few minutes). Overnight rate is very reasonable at £3.50. Traffic in Reading is a nightmare though, so even very short journeys at busy times will take ages.

The hotel is OK. My room was adequate, generally clean & quiet and of reasonable size, though bathroom was relatively small. Furnishings are adequate, though rather old fashioned & tired.

Service was friendly & eficient. The breakfast was good & well priced at £12.50.

Would be happy to stay again (if on business trip) & a central location was required.
