Owner description: An 18th-century house, a 1950s homeThis is a story of grandeur created, dissolved and resurrected - not once, but twice.Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland, which was lovingly rescued from ruin by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. They filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.

“Well worth a visit”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

Was working here on the set of Downton Abbey which was using some of the rooms for filming, lovely grounds & when open to the public its well worth a visit if your in the area, lots of history associated with the house & looks like they do a decent tea by all accounts but plenty of space for a picnic, good for a family day out weather permitting of course.

“Slightly different NT property”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

First visit and we will return. Lovely grounds, beautiful house. They have made it very interesting in the rooms with various small touches and in the kitchen we sat for nearly an hour looking at the books and listening to the 'oldie' music. Great day, had lunch and tea there-very nice. Served by nice young people, smiles and funny comments-makes a day out so much more pleasant.

“Very interesting National Trust property”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

This small but elegant house has a very interesting history started from the wealth of tea plantation owners in India, through being used as a base for US Army personnel in the second World War and ending up being owned by a local newspaper baron before being handed over to the NT. Go and visit! You wont be disappointed.

We loved that you get to see the family photos and feel this house has been really lived in. Beautiful setting and the tour does not take forever. Interesting and informative.
