Owner description: An 18th-century house, a 1950s homeThis is a story of grandeur created, dissolved and resurrected - not once, but twice.Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland, which was lovingly rescued from ruin by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the mid 1950s. The house you see today is a re-creation and restoration of the 18th-century mansion. They restored the elegant interior and scoured the country salvaging 18th-century architectural fixtures and fittings. They filled their comfortable new home with fine paintings, fabrics and furniture, which can still be enjoyed by visitors today.

“Interesting”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

Interesting house built between 1776 and 1783. Restored and recreated in the 1950s. Nice collection of 18th and 19th century antiques. Visit the 1950s style kitchen. Very homely property with friendly room guides. Lovely extensive grounds to take a stroll around.

“Basildon Park is an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

Basildon is first documented in 1311 when it was granted by the crown to Elias de Colleshull. From 1654 till 1766 Basildon was under the Fane family ownership, when a mansion house was built with Gothic lodges.

“Superb Day Out”
Reviewed September 1, 2012

An unplanned visit by friends resulted in a trip to Basildon Park. There was plenty of parking space, everything was very well signposted. The reception staff were very helpful as my friends were National Trust Members, but had left their cards at home. They phoned the membership centre and confirmed their status.

The house and grounds are very well kept, and the tour of the house was very informative and interesting. Fully recommended for a group day out.

“Excellent example of British/ National Trust splendor”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Nice day out, house and gardens are about 15 mins for the motorway and well signposted, great architecture which is probably why its used so much for movies.

Staff were really good, helped to answer our usual 'what/ when/ who/ how - history' questions and the cafe is nice for a light bite.

A minor thing, but a nice touch came after we had been for a long walk; one of the guides gave us a ride in his golf buggy through the grounds and back to the car park - really cool when its 31 degrees.
