Description: A Reading pub with a relaxing vibe. Regulars say The Abbot Cook has 'the best beer garden in Reading', but that's not entirely true; it has two. With a line-up of entertainment as eclectic as its top-drawer drinks list, there's also plenty going on inside this Cemetery Junction pub. Don't get us wrong, though: we're more 'gently buzzing' than rowdy and raucous. Our eclectic interior lends itself to a relaxed chilled out drink after work as well as a dining experience to celebrate those special occasions.

Good food and lovely staff. they have a good and unusual selection of wine, beers and spirits Went there for Christmas dinner last year too and it had a proper homely feel! But, don't bother using the beer garden unless you don't want to be heard over the traffic. The bamboo and plants don't really block out the noise!

Good beer from an extensive 'menu', nice food (too nice!) with a wide choice, and entertaining nights (quiz night, open mic etc), good atmosphere and decor - what's not to like :)

The place looks like a pub and is a pub but they've definitely made an effort to be a bit more than that. The food they serve is more restaurant quality than pub food and this is evident also in their service and how the foods are served.

Despite the good effort, the food doesn't quite reach a restaurant level. It's nice and slightly better than average, but often a bit bland. The wine selection is quite nice.

Abbot Cook can be a very nice experience during the day for lunch or for an early afternoon dinner. Or perhaps on a quiet weeknight. Instead of drunken guys you might find the place occupied by slightly classier people, women in particular enjoying conversations sipping a glass of wine. (White wines etc. are served with nice coolers.)

The problem is, that the location is next to so called "Studentville" - a residential area with lots of students. And before this place became the Abbot Cook, it was just another dirty student pub called 'Upin Arms' .

So if you go there later at night expecting to have a nice bottle of wine or a nice meal, you might be surprised to find out that the place has reverted to a mere normal pub. And often with LOUD MUSIC. I guess the problem is that they are trying to sell things to both client groups - rowdy students and adults who prefer quality.

So depending on when you go there the atmosphere of the place ranges from terrible to good.

The Abbot Cook, is a lovely place to eat. The food is excellent and the staff are friendly. It is the sort of place that a woman on her own, could go to eat , without feeling awkward .

We were a table of 5, the waitress, Liz, was very friendly, helpful and also knowledgeable about the food on the menu.
The starters were excellent and the mains were delicious.
They serve Belgium kriek and a good variety of beers and other drinks
Highly recommended
