“Great vibe, great stay”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Stayed while visiting friends. Hotel has a very classy feel and great atmosphere. On arrival we had a small problem with the room and we were offered an alternative straight away with no hassle. Both rooms were spotlessly clean. Had everything we needed in the room and the bed was superb. Slept like a baby! Can thoroughly recommend the breakfast which was first rate. Staff were always friendly and very helpful. Very much looking forward to my next stay at The Penta!

Weekend stay at this hotel in July. The hotel is located at the top of the main/high street. It is ideally located for any shopping. The rooms are clean, spacious and stylish. Our room did not have a bath but had a great rainforest type shower and a separate handheld shower head. I found the price of breakfast and the room service to be really expensive considering there are cafes, restaurants, takeaways and stores less than a 5 minute walk from the hotel. There is the Oracle Shopping mall which is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. Behind the Oracle you have the Riverside which is where you will find loads of restaurants, bars and a cinema. A tip regarding parking: There is on street parking outside the hotel at 50p for 20mins with a maximum stay of 2 hours without return for 2 hours. There is a parking spot less than 50 metres from the hotel where you can park for free for a maximum of 2 hours and across the road from that spot you can park free for free for an hour otherwise you can park in the car park that the hotel recommends which is a 3 minute walk from the hotel but I thought it was pricey at £10.00 for keeping the car overnight or £3.00 if you collected it before 10am.

All in all this is a great hotel and I would recommend it to anyone that needs to be near the town centre or who is looking at a smart, clean, stylish hotel.

On entering this hotel you instantly know it is trying for a contemporary and stylish vibe - either that or it is trying to reduce its bills by keeping the lights down low!

In a location only a few minutes from the amenities of Reading, but in ear shot of a busy road, the Penta is a decent hotel that has tried to appear more than it is with choices of modern decoration, a stylish wash bag in each room containing complimentary toiletries and reasonable rooms (though these are similar in size to what you would expect at a Premier Inn).

But something is missing. The attention to detail is not quite there as my room had a number of marks on the carpet and the attitude of some of the staff was not what I would expect as the welcome we received we less than friendly and the initial response to my colleague's complaint that the initial room she had been given was not made up or even clean was not particularly apologetic (though she did get a better reaction when she had to go back to complain about a much bigger issue - which is another story and not mine to tell).

Not sure if this is standard, but I had to find my kettle, tea and coffee hidden in a box under where you hang your clothes and store your bags. Perhaps they hope to save money if people can't find them. Why not leave them out and make them accessible? Strange.

The free wi-fi in the room was appalling, in fact it was a joke and virtually unusable. One minute it would allow you to connect then, a few moments later as you were going through the login procedure (again), it would drop out and say it was out of range. Do not rely on it if connecting to the internet is important. Maybe cynically, I am sure the service you pay for is much better.

Breakfast was fine but after a member of staff slowly topped up the beans, spoon by spoon, as I waited with my food going cold, she simply looked at me in a dismissive fashion, offered no apology, shut the lid on the beans and walked off. Don't get me wrong, I didn't object to waiting but some courtesy and acknowledgement would've been nice.

This is a pleasant hotel and fine for an overnight stop but I got the feeling that it had pretensions that it doesn't quite match up to.

Stayed here last weekend for 1 night and the hotel was great. Room had everything you would need and they had free checkout till 3pm. Very central location too with all shops near by. Didnt get the breakfast as I thought 15pounds was a bit steep.

Decent hotel in a convenient city centre location with tidy rooms but missing some key points. The breakfast offering was poor on the Sunday morning we were there. The chef was not able to provide a poached egg or a boiled egg (some chef!) and the fried eggs were constantly running out to be replaced by just a few each time there was a delivery from the kitchen. You have to get everything yourself including tea/coffee and even making toast which is just plain irritating. Staff at reception excellent. A good Italian eatery just around the corner provides a good evening meal.

This hotel was more than expected for the price. The reception/bar area is fantastic, loads of comfy places to lounge around with a nice cocktail. The room itself is fantastic with a HUGE comfy bed (although oddly with two duvets and a terry toweling sheet!) Great bathroom with rainwater shower and fun, free toiletries. Great 3pm checkout on a Sunday and nice buffet breakfast (fantastic scrambled eggs!) All in all much better than expected, would definitely look to stay with chain again.
