Duke of Marlborough
Ranked #1 of 13 Woodstock B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 6, 2013

... the bed! The Duke of Marlborough, just to the north of Woodstock, proved a real find. We stayed in an 'executive double room' and at a cost of £100 for a room of suite like proportions this provided excellent value and would probably have cost fifty to a hundred pounds more just ten miles down the road in Oxford. Every aspect of service we encountered was friendly, efficient and first class. The rooms are situated in a newish 'old build' development to the rear of the original Duke of Marlborough pub which helps protect sleepers from the inevitable road noise and it is very pleasant to be able to step inside a lovely and characterful Oxfordshire pub literally within a few seconds of leaving one's room. Better still, the food on offer in the pub is - again like the service - excellent and offers a wide range in terms of both choice and affordability. We also enjoyed breakfast in the bar area and this was second to none in terms of 'bed and breakfasts' we have experienced and enjoyed. Which brings us back to the only downside of this experience, the bed...or at least the one in room 205. To some extent I appreciate this is a matter of taste, some like a firm mattress while others prefer something softer but this really did take 'soft' to a new level with hollows of almost hammock like proportions on both sides of the bed. A real pity this, the owners clearly know what they are about and virtually everything about both the pub/restaurant and the residential aspects of the Duke of Marlborough is superb. A new mattress and they would certainly have deserved an 'excellent'.

Just returned from an excellent weekend at the Marlborough. I am a coeliac and that can cause a few menu issues! Derek at the Marlborough had a choice that I have never had the privilege of experiencing before! Nothing was too much trouble and the food was of excellent quality, the staff were very polite and helpful despite being extremely busy on our Saturday evening meal. So helpful we decided to repeat the experience Sunday evening and were not disappointed. The rooms are comfortable and away from the main building so noise was not an issue, the toiletries were replaced as were the refreshments in our room when we returned from our excursion to Blenheim Palace. I can thoroughly recommend this establishment, you will not be disappointed.

We stayed at the Duke of Marlborough for 2 nights with friends and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel. The rooms were more than adequate and the food can only be described as excellent. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. The owner made himself available at all times and was at pains to make sure that everything was to our liking. We will certainly return should we find ourselves in the area.

Arriving late with a starving teenager was not a problem for the lovely staff at the Duke of Marlborough. They very kindly prepared a meal and as we are in the restaurant business we know what a pain this is! The owner is delightful and the service culture is wonderful. The rooms are basic but comfortable and are very good value, they have everything you need. Our breakfasts were delicious and our dinners were equally so. Great atmosphere in the pub and the local folk singers were great fun. We thoroughly felt welcomed and the service was wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. Great base to explore Blenheim Palace and Oxford.

The Duke of Marlborough served us very well for our 3 night stay in the area. Rooms were fine, as was the food and drink, some really nice guest beers. Staff were all very welcoming. Derek was a real star. The staff are obviously led by him in that they are a very amicable and welcoming group of people. A great asset to the establishment. The weather wasn't brilliant but the staff kept the wood burner topped up, very cosy. Parking here is good, unlike Woodstock where looking for a place to park just to call in a shop takes an age. Bus stop outside could be very useful. Perfect location for Blenheim Palace. We would certainly recommend the Duke of Marlborough, it would be a very fussy individual who could fault the experience we had, especially at the price.
We will certainly use it again. Thanks to Derek and his staff.

During our 5-night stay we were agreeably looked on as family. The courteous friendliness of staff was invariable at all times. Service is of such high quality that our needs were always met with great care, and were often anticipated. The charisma and warmth of this fine establishment stem from the owner-manager, a man charming in manner and effective in his leadership of his team. He respects his staff, and is respected by them; he gives his all in an unobtrusive hands-on style, and both by example and quiet guidance, brings out the best in his staff. Their pride in their service matches the efficiency and harmony of their teamwork. Nothing is too much trouble and assistance always readily provided, eg with local transport and attractions. We had intended to dine at other restaurants, but the quality and variety of the food and the excellence of the service were such that we dined 'at home' on all five evenings. Our guest on one evening was highly impressed with this dining excellence.

Our sole criticism is that the room we had was rather sparsely furnished. There is good wardrobe space, but one or two chairs would enhance the attraction of the accommodation.

We booked the 'Duke' for a visit to Oxfordshire. After a long trip from Pembrokeshire we arrived to a warm welcome. We had our first evening meal at the pub and were very pleased with the food and the service. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The cooked breakfast was just the right proportions, the sausage one of the best we'd had! Beer wasn't bad either!
Our 2 night stay was more than adequate and we would stop there again. Great base to visit Blenheim and Oxford.
