The exterior drew us in and we initially had a good impression. We waited a while to be seated but found the table rather cramped. The waitress was overstretched but did her best. We were not in a hurry so waiting was not an issue. When the food came both the soup and sandwich were both good. The bill was reasonable for Oxford.

We went to The Grand Cafe for High Tea on a Sunday afternoon. It was packed, so we did have to wait for a few minutes, but the staff were attentive and polite and were very quick in getting us to a table as soon as one became available. The Grand Cafe is decorated beautifully, so it really is somewhere for a special occasion. The sandwiches came in two varieties - smoked salmon or egg, which were both delicious but given that they listed other kinds of sandwiches on the rest of the menu it would have been nicer to either have had more variety or more choice. The scones were the definition of the word "scrummy". Warm, soft and so so chewy. There was a generous amount of jam and cream to go with them as well. The small chocolates on the top tier of the cake/ tea stand were a bit plain, but still tasted good. They also had a good variety of teas, all of which were very of a high quality.
I would definitely go back, but I wouldn't make it the kind of place I would frequent every week.

We booked The Grand Cafe for a drinks party for my son's 21st Birthday. He is studying at the university and wanted to have a celebration with his friends. We looked at several of the bars in Oxford and spoke to the managers. Ray, the manager at The Grand Cafe was by far the most helpful and accommodating. We were supposed to have exclusive use of the venue from 6.30pm until 11, but the party was still going on at midnight and the staff were happy to continue serving until the money we had put behind the bar (the minimum spend they ask for for exclusive use, which was half the amount of other bars) ran out. They could have easily told us at 11 that the tab had run out but they didn't and to be frank nobody was without a drink in their hand throughout the night.
The cocktails were really superb, every one is made with fresh ingredients, whisking egg whites, squeezing exotic fruits and the most expensive was £6 for the champagne cocktails. Canapés were also provided, a tray on each table and again they were interesting and a very good quality.
We ordered balloon bouquets from Frog Orange Balloons and they were delivered before we arrived. The staff placed them on the tables and when my son and his friends arrived (I think there were about 50 people on the night) the cafe looked fabulous.
Ray and his staff worked tirelessly throughout the night and a great night was had by all.
I would recommend the Grand Cafe for a private function, they really did an excellent job. Thank you

You look at the Grand Cafe and judging form it's name and outward appearance it promises a genteel experience. The reality, unfortunately is rather different. We were rather crushed in out seats and when our order of a cream tea arrived, we discovered that the amount of jam and cream supplied was woefully inadequate for the scones. We asked for more 3 times in total and although the waitress was willing enough to bring it, I do wonder why the necessary amount wasn't supplied to start with. That said the quality of the food was good, however the decor and ambience really disappoints.

Like the last reviewer I have never written a review before but felt compelled to after our visit to the Grand Cafe.

We decided to visit for a special breakfast on the last day of our break in Oxford. I had visited about 12 years ago and at that time it lived up to it's grand exterior. However the best way to describe it now is as a basic, and over-priced, greasy spoon within a lovely but unfortunately run down and poorly treated building. The veggie breakfast was supposed to have a veg sausage and instead hash browns were served, with no apology when we asked where the sausages were. The food was over priced, the wcs and cafe run down. There is nothing grand about this cafe anymore- such a shame.
