“Lovely restaurant; so different from the other Oxford offerings...”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

We have been looking forward to going to Edamame for a while now. We always end up in Oxford when they are closed for the holidays, but today we got in!

We had the Ton Katsu, Chicken Karaage and the Beef special together with some salmon and edamame - all of the food was fantastic and my daughters really enjoyed the food and the relaxed atmosphere. The service was very friendly and unhurried, although the restaurant was really busy. We appreciated that we were not rushed out of the door despite a queue of people waiting to get in. Prices were between £7-8 for mains / £3 for side dishes, which I thought was good value.

The opening hours are idiosyncratic, but once we got a grip of them we were able to come at the right time. Some other reviewers have commented on the shared seating arrangements - we really liked the way things were done as it felt particularly social and relaxed.

Overall - lovely food and wonderful ambience

“Just go now.”
Reviewed November 24, 2013

The place opens for lunch at 11.30 and by 11.50 it was already full with a mix of locals and tourists, overall it looked as if about a third of the customers were Japanese. We had three versions of miso ramen - basically noodles in broth, either veggie or pork or chicken, big helpings and absolutely delicious, with a free cup of Japanese green tea to wash it down. It's crowded, it can be noisy, you may have to share a table, but the service is very friendly and efficient and everyone there was actually enjoying themselves. If I lived in Oxford I'd probably go at least once a week - it is a brilliant place (and very good value).

“Top quality”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

I've been going to Edamame regularly for a couple of years. It's definitely the best restaurant I know of in Oxford.

Edamame has rather unusual opening hours, so it's best to check on their website before going. They only offer the dinner menu on Fridays and Saturdays, and they offer sushi on Thursday evenings. I recommend going there as soon as it opens, as the restaurant's popularity far outstrips its capacity and queues often form later on. It is well worth the wait however! Do be aware that it is generally necessary to share a table with other people.

The menu offers a good variety of dishes. Everything is well-explained so you shouldn't have trouble ordering if you are unfamiliar with Japanese food. It is very difficult to go wrong as pretty much everything I've tried has been excellent. Some particular favourites are the chicken katsu and the salmon teriyaki. The yaki niku beef is also delicious; though despite being labelled as a special I have never seen the beef special be anything else.

Staff are friendly and service is generally good. There have been a couple of times when I have been kept waiting but for the most part food is served in a timely manner. Considering the quality of the food it is also very good value.

All in all, highly recommended. If you're looking for quality food, you can't go far wrong here.

“Awesome authentic Japanese with atmosphere”
Reviewed November 9, 2013 via mobile

This is a small Japanese restaurant on Holywell Street. There is no booking so be prepared to queue. The restaurant rotates menus to keep it fresh and has a sushi night on a Thursday. It is open in the evenings three nights a week,

We went at 6.30 on a Saturday night and had a 20 minute queue outside. If you don't want to queue don't go! The staff are good at gauging the size of tables outside and the seating is on shared tables so if you have a large group you may want to split up. The approach is about pace and so this is not the place for a romantic dinner for two or a big party celebration lasting all evening. For some very tasty food though and an experience it is fantastic.

We had the edamame beans and some pickled vegetables. Both tapas size and well done.

We then had the octopus pieces in pancakes - the best thing we had with flaked fish sauce on top. The special beef was beautifully tender in a spicy sauce. The deep fried salmon and chicken were both wonderfully hot and crisp. The mixed prawns were good but our least favourite out of the lot.

They serve Japanese lager and dark beer along with a range of Japanese wines and sake. We had a meal which cost £51 for four of us and really enjoyed it. We were in and out in less than an hour and half including queuing so its a great place to go before the theatre or cinema. Last sittings are at 8.30. Lunchtime is cash only so go prepared. Also they don't proffer cutlery so be prepared to wield a chopstick in anger.

Just do it. As long as you are ok with the queuing you will love the experience

Thank you very much for the kind words in your review. You certainly capture the essence of Edamame in your description - your enthusiastic and frank remarks are very refreshing to read ! We always feel encouraged when our guests enthuse about the things that we are rather than criticise the things that we are not or do not try to be !! Perhaps one day you will come and enjoy a hearty noodle dish or our popular curry dish that we serve at lunchtimes ! By the way, if you're in need of cutlery we are most happy to offer some, so please don't hesitate to ask.

Kind regards,

Peter Galpin
