“Terrific Thai - should be top 5 in Oxford.”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

This was a fantastic find in Oxford, so be sure not to overlook it. In my opinion much better than many restaurants currently rated higher in tripadvisor.

The restaurant has a unique charm in terms of location and layout - down a Dickensian alleyway to a ramshackle building which is twisting in every direction but held together through history and the love of good food. The building had a number of cosy rooms each with their own quirkiness - so don't worry too much about where you sit.

Having set the scene, the main vent (food) does not disappoint this amazing setting. We had the seafood Tom yam soup for 2 which is served in a huge silver dish and is stuffed full of fabulous tastes. One of the bet soups anywhere ever! I then had the duck curry which was equally impressive

Service was outstanding, friendly, professional, efficient. Wine at a reasonable price. What more cold you wish for - I will,an a return visit to Oxford just to go back.

“Good Thai in heart of city”
Reviewed May 1, 2013 via mobile

This was a very acceptable meal. For sure it was not the best Thai meal in the world, outside Thailand, but the food was natural, fresh, flavoursome and well balanced. They signal hot being 2 peppers but do nit be put off, thats mild so comforting. Fish cakes are a good barometer, and these were eell made. There are 2 floors in this very old buildjng. Upstairs is used first and best area apart from the amazingly noisy dumb waiter.

“Raymond Blanc worked here”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

In the 1990's apparently the restaurant which was not a Thai restaurant at that timt I think it was La Sorbonne is where a certain Mr Blanc worked perfecting his craft.

The building is down an alley off one of the main streets and it is listed, so not like anyother Thai restaurant I have been to as they have kept (they have to) all of the features.

The down size is that there are 3 smallish dining rooms, two of which are up stairs which means that dining is cosy.

The food is very good, I suppose typical Thai with the usual variations on chicken, fish, vegetables etc, but that said it is well executed and presented.

It is open all day from about 10 until late and as such don't expect fine dining and a long leisurely lunch or dinner, whilst the service is not hurried the place clearly has an air of people eating not people eating and staying for long periods.

Nothing wrong with this as it works well, we spent about one and a half hours there and as avid table watchers some tables had 2 sittings in that time, although I must stress the restaurant wasn't hurrying people up.

If you fancy Thai or a change from curry in old surroundings in the heart of the city it is a must visit.

“This restaurant should be higher up in the trip advisor ranks”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

I've now lived in Oxford for 5 years and I try to vary where I go for food, but when it really is just about great food, service and ambience I end up coming back to Chang Mai. As mentioned in other reviews the restaurant is in a lovely old building, I like it upstairs where there is a good buzz and makes for a fun dining experience, the service is very attentive, the food is really good and I feel I've had value for money. I try and bring friends who are visiting here and they've always enjoyed the whole dining experience. Oxford has some good pubs but restaurants don't always live up to expectations, but Chang Mai does.

“Good Thai restaurant in ancient building”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

Easy to book online. We were a party of 7 that initially were placed in a room with a huge party that made so much noise we could barely think. We asked and were quickly moved downstairs into a cosy little room with a most amazing carved wood mantlepiece and much more atmospheric than upstairs. Service was very good. On the menu there was something for everyone and everyone was happy with their choice, though we put it all in the middle of the table and shared all the dishes. A good evening out.
