Follow the sign on the High Street...down the alley....through the old wooden door...up the staircase...and there it will be...the busy Thai resaurant.... every table packed...the delicious smells of Thai cuisine....
I got the fried tofu appetizer and shrimp pad thai for the main.... I got take out...and hustled back down the street in the cold wind to sit in the lobby and enjoy my dinner with a nice drink from the bar.... I did have one regret...and that is that I didn't order more!!!! -- The food was so amazingly fresh tasting and delicious...packed with care and so neat and tidy.... The staff was so nice...
Definitely I'll be visiting again if my path ever comes close to Oxford again.....

Overall, our meal tonight was disappointing.

As appetisers we tried scallops, the Chiang Mai salad and Laab Ped duck salad. These were adequate/average plus and we had some hopes that the main courses would deliver similarly or better.

Our hopes were dashed. The Chiang Mai chicken was dull and rather tasteless, though improved somewhat, but not enough, by the accompanying sauce, and it was expensive too . The venison curry was poor, mainly because the curry sauce was tart and cloying (at the same time) which was a shame as the venison itself and the vegetables were alright.

But perhaps there is a sauce problem. This afflicted the steamed vegetable side dish (to the chicken) when for some reason, despite having asked for sauce to be on the side, was served caked in a sweet peanut sauce - not wanted, not asked for and sent back. It was replaced with good grace, but what a waste of quite-well steamed vegetables.

The steamed, sticky rice dessert was poor too.,

Now, the issues could not be put down to the place being crowded as it was not, and this was the first time of our several visits on which we did not have to queue. Maybe it was a very cold evening, or maybe the word is out....?

We've been to Chiang Mai a couple of times - the food has been delicious both times. The restaurant is a little small so recommend maybe not going at peak times - have seen people queuing down the stairs waiting for a table! Don't be put off by the "down the alleyway" location - well worth a visit!

After missing out on a Thai meal last week in Brighton, I spent some time searching for a restaurant in Oxford. I found Chiang Mai Kitchen, but decided against it due to the recent negative reviews. A few hours later and we stumbled past the restaurant whilst wandering around Oxford. We all fancied Thai so decided to give it a go.
The greeting was Thai, not gushing with warmth but efficient. Drinks arrived promptly. We ordered a selection of starters and mains which arrived in good time (not too fast to suspect they had been pre prepaired, not so slow that we suspected the staff were chasing the chicken through the streets to slaughter it prior to cooking!) Full of flavour and the right sized portions to fill us up nicely. I am glad that we ignored the less positive reviews on this occasion as we had a really nice meal.

CMK has a long and varied menu, with plenty of vegetarian and spicy options for those who like their chili. The food is very good and of a high, consistent quality for this price range - similarly inexpensive Thai restaurants in Oxford can be really disappointing. The restaurant is candle-lit and in an old building. We went there for a birthday and the staff was really nice about bringing out a cake (our own) with lit candles while dimming the lights.

Oh and the papaya salad is excellent!
