Description: In Oxford you'll find a warm welcome at the Rose and Crown (built in 1863). Run by Deborah and Andrew for 30years, the award winning pub is popular with students, locals and tourists of all ages and interests. The bar stocks a range of traditional English bitter on handpump, as well as good wines, malt whiskies, Belgian bottled beers and lager. The menu offers a selection of hot and cold meals, freshly made sandwiches and light snacks. The traditional interior is simply styled with a cosy, characterful atmosphere and to the rear a vine-draped, heated and covered courtyard. Close to the town centre. Recommendations include The Good Pub Guide, The Good Beer Guide, The Quiet Pint.

“Long may it continue”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

A classic pub full of atmosphere and charm tucked into central North Oxford, an area sorely lacking in pubs. Hook Norton is on tap, the roof is low, the beer garden popular. Thank god it has not been 'gastro-ed'.

“Great pub but really awful food”
Reviewed June 8, 2011

One of Oxford's best pubs for drinking in, but not for eating. Tried it twice, because I just couldn't believe how bad it was the first time. But the second time was as bad. The food is very poor quality and badly cooked. Will continue to drink real ale in this lovly pub but, sorry, no more food.

“Nice, Cosy English Pub with friendly landlord”
Reviewed November 14, 2010

Nice, Cosy English Pub with friendly landlord. There is always some great Ale and Cider on tap (along with spirits and a decent wine list, served in grails and goblets), the food is home made and quite good, the service is great and very friendly. The feel of the place is quite authentic and conservative: you'l often see some old Don reading a paper next to the fire with a pint in his hand... imagine the Eagle and Child if it was run by a family and too far away from the center to get all those tourists, that's sorta like the Rose and Crown. It needs to be said that the drink prices are slightly higher than what you might be used to, 3.20 to 3.50 a pint was about what you should expect. But its a small price to pay to have a pub free of drunken 17 year-olds where you can be sure that the food isn't coming out of a microwave. Nice Garden out back as well... Tell Andrew Frank says hi!

“An Oxford treasure...”
Reviewed April 19, 2010

...despite some quirks (variable food, not cheap, "acquired taste" landlord).

But all in all a stonking good traditional local boozer.
