Description: The Fishes is a hidden gem. Quite a big gem, too. An imposing Victorian building set in acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream. The deck that wraps around the conservatory offers a rare opportunity in land-locked Oxford to dine outside with an idyllic view. In recognition of this, the Fishes was named Al Fresco Dining Pub of the Year in 2006, as well winner of The Public Vote in Oxfordshire Restaurant awards 2012 making it one of the best restaurants in Oxford.

Had lunch here on a Saturday, when 60 of us were attending a college reunion. Apart from our own group - the place was buzzing which indicates how well thought of this place is among the locals. Must say it has changed somewhat over the last 50 years when it used to be the favoured watering hole for students from our college.

Visited here to meet a business associate. Excellent coffee as always (with Smarties on the side). Really loved the smoked salmon and fennel sandwich with a small mug of homemade soup. Great value at under £8 and very filling - clearly put together by someone who really cares about how food tastes. My business associate had a chicken risotto that she said was also delicious - a starter portion which was plenty for lunch.
Service friendly, efficient and informal although took a while to add the bill up. Only other niggle is the loos could do with a bit of freshening up - they are a bit tired compared to the rest of the place.
Owen the manager is delightful (and a fellow Welsh person so we had a good chat about the rugby).
Overall, excellent, would recommend and will be returning. Thanks to the whole of the team for a very pleasant visit.

Visited The Fishes on Friday 07 June 13 for lunch with a friend. The food was very good but service was poor. The waiting staff appear to be of the opinion that they are far more important than the customers. Such a shame as it has always been a fabulous pub which we have visited countless times over the years but has gone downhill recently. Will think twice before going back again.

I'd heard good things about The Fishes, so we booked in for a meal for us, four friends and a toddler. When we arrived at The Fishes I fell in love with the place. The garden runs down to the river, and there are lots of fern trees giving a lovely relaxed, garden atmosphere which is enhanced by the picnic benches and deck chairs in the garden.

The food was fantastic - by far the best meal I've eaten out in a long time, and my friends all agreed. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and we enjoyed a lovely relaxed meal.

They do picnic baskets from a hatch just outside the back entrance to the pub. I'm definitely going back to try one of those, and to have another meal. This has now become my favourite gastro pub in the Oxford area.

Gastro pub with some nice touches. We were a little unsure about the 'heritage' potatoes which sound a little past their sell by date, and the Atlantic haddock - are you really sure that they don't come from somewhere else and just happen to get caught there? It might sound silly but these names and distinctions are just pompous and detract from the atmosphere.
