“Unique & great experience!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I took my mum to Oxford last weekend as a birthday treat. After looking for an affordable hotel and doing some research I found that access to the colleges is pretty restricted unless you're a guest so I booked Keble College. Staying at the college was a great experience and from the moment we arrived we were really well looked after. We arrived early in the morning so our rooms weren't ready but just like a hotel they were happy to hold onto our luggage. When we returned later a gentleman showed us to our room and carried all our luggage. Having been at univeristy I wasn't expecting too much from the accommodation but our room was fine. They had left a full range of toiletries, tea, hot choc and coffee and there was even a fridge! The bathroom was absolutely fine too.The following morning breakfast was served in the great hall which was incredible, much nicer than your average breakfast room!Overally the accommodation was good, nothing flash obviously but perfect if all you need is a base to look around Oxford. But what you really stay there for is the surroundings, they are truly stunning. I would recommend Keble College to anyone and will definitely be returning to Oxford and another college stay soon.

Room Tip: The Old Parsonage Hotel is just across the road and does an amazing Afternoon Tea!

I did not think highly of Keble when I was a student in Oxford, but living in the b&b really showed how comfortable the college is. The rooms are a bit spartan, but hey, they are student rooms and perfectly serviceable. Breakfast in the hall is rather nice, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I would go back and stay there!
I was very very happy there!

A great way of staying in central Oxford for a short stay, especially if you interested in the history & visiting the colleges. Opted for Keble as we could get a double & ensuite (not available at all Colleges)

Check in & out, via the Porter’s lodge was efficient with room available early. Bag storage pre & post room occupancy if required – ideal as we had used the park & ride car park (Redbridge, as we came from the South) & therefore got the best part of 2 days exploring central Oxford, without the hassle of car parking & heavy charges.

Don’t expect high class hotel standard facilities - room, bed & ensuite a little basic & showing their age, exactly as you would expect. No TV. However laundry was clean, with fresh towels as required and the ‘usual’ touch with complementary toiletries. WiFi advertised although we did not use it.

However a great experience with a room looking out over the ‘quad’ & breakfast in the main hall – a real treat with the neo Gothic style, long tables and forms and Keble crockery/cutlery. A good photo opportunity. Student bar also worth a visit!

Thoroughly recommend

Room Tip: Choose a Quad facing room

Keble College provided the perfect setting for my fist slice of Oxford life. Its historic academic buildings and well-kept grassy quad were straight out of any Oxford-set book or film.

Check-in was quick and stress-free. We were then guided to our room by an enthusiastic and friendly Oxford student. The room itself exceeded expectations in terms of cleanliness and welcome. The bedroom was well-sized with ample storage space. The shower room was small but again clean.

Rooms have WiFi but no TV, which just adds to the experience. Reading a book or going to sit in the quad is far more fitting! Of course, there is the less idyllic bar if you fancy sharing stomping ground with some of the college's current students (we did this and sat in the outdoor area, which was rather fun).

Arguably the best part of staying here is breakfast in the breathtakingly grand and undoubtedly Harry Potter-esque Great Hall. Here you can revel in the architecture, survey historic portraits and take touristy photos, all whilst being extremely well-fed.

The breakfast stuff available includes good-quality carnivorous and veggie full English, continental (croissants, pan au chocolat, toasts and jams), cheese and ham selection, fruit, yogurt and cereals.

Check out is by 10am, which we found to be a little too early. However, this was softened by the availability of free luggage storage.

All in all, our stay was fantastic. The room was comfortable and service was of a high standard. Essentially, staying in the uni was the best decision we made to compliment a trip to Oxford.

(Incidentally, we were in Oxford for Alice's Day: a day-long festival in tribute to Lewis Carroll's Alice books that we'd highly recommend).

Room Tip: Be sure to request a room in the old buildings! Also, you can pay extra to get a quad-facing room...

We discovered that driving into Oxford, parking and then trying to find Keble College was a nightmare. The website says "Keble College, Parks Road, Oxford" - we discovered Parks Road is a long road. We did a lot of walking and asking before were able to find Keble. The website also says "check in at the Porter's Lodge (located at the main entrance to the college)". We discovered a "Porter's Lodge" is not a "Lodge" - it's the office at the entrance. Where's the entrance? It is a little nondescript wooden door with a bell and a small sign that said "Keble College" - you would never see this driving by. Parking is expensive. We parked in a park and ride lot. The bus driver never heard of "Keble College" and only would say his route covered "city center" - is that near Parks Road? And where on Parks Road is Keble? Not much fun when you are also hauling around your luggage. We stayed in the "Superior Family Suite 4" - 2 bedrooms with 1 bathroom. The rooms were clean and adequate. The buildings are architecturally beautiful. The dining hall is breathtaking. The food is so-so - the eggs were cold. Was the experience worth it? No, not really. The hassles of driving, parking and locating Keble (1 of 38 colleges at "Oxford University") made the experience just too difficult. If you are considering staying at Keble or any of the other colleges, take the train and then hire a cab to take you directly to the college entrance. Once you actually locate the place and get settled in, you'll find the staff very helpful.

Keble College was the third Oxford college I have stayed at in the summer so far and definitely the best in every respect: price, location, room quality, etc. Although still a dorm, my room felt more like a hotel room than the others. Although not quite in the middle of downtown Oxford like some of the collegeds, it still has a convenient, central location just a block or two north of Broad Street and literally across the street from the Pitt Rivers museum. You definitely won't have to walk too far to anything.

Keble has been known for its somewhat eccentric architecture: when it was built in the late nineteenth century, many people complained that it's neo-gothic, brick pattern motif was incredibly ugly. It is still distinctive, but its size and the chapel are just as impressive to untrained eyes like mine as many of the other, older colleges. I mention all of this because my room was in a part of the quad which was a later addition to the college and with its spaceship-like windows, looks more like something out of the 1960s. This is a good thing because it makes the rooms seem much nicer and more spacious than your typical dorm. My room had huge windows letting in plenty of light and then a funny-looking seating area with red cushions built in underneath the windows. The bed was a typically small single, but better than the army cot quality of some Oxford dorms. It also had a large desk, a sink and a small refrigerator, which was a first for any of the university dorms I stayed at in the UK. The bathroom was right next to my room with a nice shower and I only shared it with the room across the landing, which was nice: none of that one bathroom for five rooms stuff. They provided nice toiletries and in-room coffee and tea stuff.

I was very close to the college bar which was a handy place to hang out and watch tv with a beer. Sitting at tables outside in the quad was nice and the bartender was very friendly. I also preferred to use the wifi down there where the signal was strong: it was somewhat erratic in my room itself. However I realized on my last night there that it had a LAN hookup in the room, which is what I was supposed to be using instead (just get a cord from the porters).

I can't comment on the quality of the breakfast because I was never up in time for it in the morning (7:30AM- 9AM I think was when it was open).

I would definitely recommend Keble to people trying to stay in downtown Oxford without paying a fortune to do so.

Excellent!!!! This bed and breakfast was awesome while staying in Oxford! The dining hall is beautiful reminding you of Harry Potter! Easy to check in and not bad at all considering it is a dorm room. Beautiful grounds and lovely area of Oxford. Great experience!!!
