Owner description: Oxford Castle Unlocked explores the 1000-years of Oxford's History. Led by one of our costumed characters, the rich history of the castle with a prison at its heart will be revealed to you. Climb St. George's Tower and take in the stunning views before descending into the atmospheric crypt, along the 18th century prison wing and into archaic man-made mound.

“Very informative and enjoyable”
Reviewed November 19, 2013 via mobile

As we've lived in the area for 14 years we thought the time had come to visit the castle, it was either that or the ashmolean museum and I think we chose wisely. If I had planned it better then I could have saved a couple of quid by booking online in advance, but must say it was worth the £9 or so entry fee. Having read the other reviews there's not much more to add, the advantage this has over other attractions is the guide, he made the trip very informative and catered for all types, from the oldies (my boisterous mother) to the young children..not an easy task but admirably performed. Plenty of steps to burn the Sunday roast off, poor old ma couldn't manage them all so missed the great view over Oxford..all in all a good, value for money, afternoon out!

“good tour”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

Had a good tour of the castle dungeons and crypt. Although the tour guide was entertaining and amusing at times, i would have enjoyed more in the way of factual information. That said, the tour was good and the veiw of Oxford from the tower top was amazing. We did not go on for the after tour meal as we had other arrangements.

“very informative”
Reviewed November 18, 2013

We went to Oxford for a day and stiumbled on the Castle we went on the tour around the castle and found the guide very informative, did not realise what the castle was used for and how horrible times the prisoner had right from the early ages up until 1996, we would recommend anyone while visiting Oxford to take the tour. Would only recommend this for people that can climb very narrow and spiral stairs.

“Interesting historical visit”
Reviewed November 17, 2013

We were staying at the Oxford Prison Hotel (Malmaison) next door and thought we would spend the morning having a guided tour around the castle and prison. The guide (a highwayman) was very amusing and knowledgeable. Yes, we climbed up the St Georges Tower (oh those stairs!) but it was worth it for the views over Oxford. Good value for money too.

“Great, entertaining, informative day!”
Reviewed November 14, 2013

It was an unusual but great day out. Our 'masked guide' was brilliant, in character throughout the tour and very friendly, chatty and informative! If you don't like stairs that go on and on and on in a circular way then this may not be for you. Although you do get to stop off a few times to visit rooms etc but then once at the top the view over Oxford is worth seeing! but then you have to go all the way down again, great exercise for the old thighs!
