“Superb guide made this visit!”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

We had a lady who acted as Mary Blandy on our visit (Cheryl)- she talked in role and told wonderful stories and information which worked really well for adults and children alike- she kept a good balance to the tour- it made the visit. She was absolutely superb. It was great to see the building and the views from the top of the tower were superb. A thoroughly enjoyable time.

Hi Vicky,

Thank you so much for the lovely review. Miss Blandy will be very pleased that you had such a great time. It's just a shame it's to late for her to call on you to testify at her trial. A strong character witness may have helped her to convince the court of her innocence and saved her from the noose.

“Amazing place - surpassed all expectations”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Despite being a 'local' I had not been tot his attraction in the centre of Oxford. Took my son for a term break day out, as I knew there were lots of places to eat nearby afterward.

The history of the castle/prison is amazing. It's so great when you have a guide who takes you around - you get so much more out of it that trying to read along in a brochure. The guides were all 'in character' as prison staff or inmates.

The tour was lengthy so I felt I got good value for money. Got to climb a tower and see an amazing view of Oxford. Also at the end of the tour - you get a little time to wander around by yourself which I liked.

I would avoid taking small children under age 5. There are lots of stairs to climb, the floor is often uneven and they might be slightly frightened by the subject matter that the guides talk about.

Hope I didn't give too much away. I would consider going again very soon.

Hello nuke_grrl (if that's your real name!!),

It's great that you were able to come down and experience the castle and prison. As a local to Oxford myself, I know that its strangely difficult to find time to visit attractions in the town, as you tend to be heading off to other places when you are free. I'm also really glad that you and your son enjoyed the history and the guides so much and are thinking of returning soon.

Obviously with the different guides and events programme we have planned this year, another visit any time would offer a whole new experience. But in 2013 we will also be adding something a little special to the attraction with the introduction of our new living history space on the ground floor of the prison wing. I think your son might like the chance to smell, hear and see what it would have been like to occupy one of the cells when the prison was still open.

“entertaining guide”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Guided trip up the castle tower, into the cells and down into the crypt with lots of useful historical information followed by an unaccompanied walk around what is left of the prison. Informative displays and some interactive items.

“Great experience”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

The guides at this place really make the experience. They are dressed in character and act the part if characters associated with the castle. Really interesting xperience at a reasonable price - less than £10. You can even pay with club card points!
