“Reasonable B&B within a bus ride to city centre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2013

Friendly B&B on the Botley Road within a 10-15 minute bus ride from Oxford city centre (bus stop outside get number 4a/b/c but check with driver on return to avoid tour of the neighbouring housing estate....). We had a spacious clean and tidy room. Breakfast ok but not quite up there with some excellent breakfasts we've had at other B&Bs recently, Not sure why there is a nominal £1 / day charge for wifi (no code in room) when this should be as free as tap water as is the case pretty much everywhere we go now.

Hello, thank you for your comments about the buses, I am sorry I didn't get a chance to explain the direct route to you on your arrival. I do hope you will return again to sample some of our breakfast specials which previous guests have commented on.

I was staying here on business and everything about this Guest House is perfect from the welcome from Sally when you arrive to the room to the breakfast (and selection). Definitely recommend to anyone looking for someone to stay in Oxford whether just for a night or for a longer stint. It is also, as others have said, easy to get to whether you are travelling by car, train or bus. I can't recommend this Guest House enough. (There is no swimming pool or fitness centre - for some reason when giving the ratings I clicked on there by mistake!!) :-)

Four of us have just returned from a weekend break here which was greatly enjoyed. We were greeted by owner Tony Tompkins and given great advice on where to eat and on the excellent bus and taxi links into the city with the railway station about one and a half miles away. Rooms were well appointed and ensuite with excellent touches such as a sewing kit which came in handy together with a well stocked tray of tea coffee and hot chocolate. Returning after our days in Oxford the complimentary brandy was very well received and made an excellent nightcap after the January cold. Breakfasts are all individually cooked and in addition Sally Tompkins goes out of her way to give choice by offering a a special in addition to the standard menu and I happily had scrambled egg with smoked salmon and eggs Benedict for the final morning. Sally is especially friendly as a hostess whilst juggling breakfast orders and it is entirely understandable that she is a previous landlady of the year winner. All in all this made for a pleasant experience and we hope to return in the future.

Room Tip: Our room, no 2, was very quiet and had attractive views over the garden and beyond to the countrys...

Stayed here for 5 days whilst undertaking some work experience. Being seventeen at the time this was the first time I was going to be staying alone. The welcome immediately put me at ease! The owners were so welcoming and friendly whilst recommending all the best places to visit. I had the top floor double room which was fantastic. I used to be a chambermaid of a 5* guest house when I was younger and must say that this room was very much on par! Great en-suite bathroom, bed to die for and the room was very clean. Would definitely recommend and come again! Thank you!

Room Tip: Top floor was lovely and quiet, very cosy also. Only reason room service is down a mark is because t...

There was 5 of us that stayed at Gables Guest House. We couldn't ask for more. Sally was the most heart warming person when she greeted us. The rooms were out of this world. Me and my Husband stayed in the double en-suite room. There was even Brandy for us lol. Shower was Fab, nice and Hot.. I have been hotels where TV remote controls don't either work or no Subtitles or Channels are missing but the TV we had was in perfectly working order.. My Son stayed in a Single room of his own and loved it.. My friend stayed with her son in the twin room en-suite and found it comfortable and relaxing. We only stayed for 2 nights but felt we could of stayed there longer. The Breakfast OMG it was Awesome.. Loads of choices and cooked to perfection.. Sally is Fab cook and a Gem. Defiantely stay there again..

Room Tip: I would say all rooms were pretty quite to where ever you stay..

Gable's Guest House presents the total comfort package for Oxford. It is five minutes on foot to a lovely pub (Seacourt Bridge) and three great takeaway restaurants. The Gables is two minutes from a bus stop that can have you in central Oxford in fifteen minutes or Blenheim Palace (birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) in thirty minutes. Sally Thompkins prepares your breakfast fresh every morning--from vegetarian to a full English, cooked to order. Finally, after tramping through Oxford or London all day, come back to a cozy, ensuite room for an evening toddy and biscuits. Worth every pence I paid. I will definitely be back.
