“An unforgettable stay!”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Every Hotel has a bad patch and this was one such occasion. Things went wrong in the kitchen but in fairness the management did its best to retrieve matters later. The positive side...

The Hotel is opposite the Oxford Union so it is central and ideal for ex-Oxfordians and tourists alike but note no easy car-parking and one needs to use expensive municipal parking or even the park and ride.

Facilities are quite good for the disabled once the entry steps are negotiated. However why do designers of wet rooms always put the showers opposite the door so one has to paddle to use the other facilities? We found the heating difficult and air conditioning was absent. Our room was "the Safe" and once things were explained it was fine. For the severely disabled the dining room access is by difficult steps.

The staff were excellent and the breakfast just about up to standard once it arrived.

Would we go again? Possibly, but we prefer the Randolph just round the corner if we are feeling affluent which does have car parking.

Room Tip: For the disabled ask for a relevant room. Rear bedrooms are quietest.

Dear Mr Langman,

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. As discussed with yourselves and followed up by myself by courtesy email, your comments were indeed valid regarding the breakfast service, and addressed accordingly. I am sorry if we let you down on this occasion.
It does please me however that you found the staff 'excellent'. The team and myself are all extremely passionate about Vanbrugh House and I hope this shows in our customer service.

We do hope you choose to stay at Vanbrugh House on your next visit to Oxford.

Great location, great room, excellent food; but the best bit is the staff. Really great, friendly, efficient, caring and interesting people that are clearly passionate about provciding a great guest experience. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay at Vanburgh House, right in the middle of Oxford's 'dreaming spires' where you wander out of the front door and you're immediately amongst interesting architecture, shops, history and ambience.

We can highly recommend this excellent hotel.

Room Tip: There's no swimming pool.

This is a charming hotel situated right in the centre of Oxford but still in a peaceful area. The vicarage suite is superb with private entrance, garden terrace, four poster bed and quite simply the best bathroom I've enjoyed. The twin baths with tv were a delight. Hotel staff were polite and friendly. Only down side is that parking is £24 per night in the public car park. Would definitely stay again and recommend.

Dear Pistol1983,

I am so pleased you enjoyed your time spent relaxing in the Vicarage Suite. Of all the rooms at Vanbrugh House, this really is the most unique. I am also glad that the service you received from the team was to the standard intended.
In regards to your comments on parking. City centre parking can sometimes prove expensive. A more affordable option is making use of Oxford park and rides. Parking is only £2.00 overnight and the buses run a very reliable service at £2.70 return.

Thank you for taking the time to write your 5 star review, we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Kind regards

Our family had two rooms at the Vanbrugh for just one night. The rooms were quite small but they were both en suite & nicely decorated. Each room had a theme with a photo & text explaining the name of the suite. Nice touch.
We chose to eat dinner in their brasserie. Everyone liked their meal very much. The hotel even gave is a discount as guests We also had a lovely breakfast which was included in the room price.
We chose this hotel because of its location in the city center. We did have to park away from the hotel about 2 blocks but there was a loading zone right in front of the hotel.
We were all very pleased with our choice.

Dear zee4,

Thank you for choosing Vanbrugh House Hotel on your recent visit to Oxford and I am really pleased you enjoyed your time here. You made the right choice for city centre location ! I am glad you had the time to dine with us in the evening. The sunken terrace this time of year is a really tranquil setting to enjoy good company and food.
Thanks you so much for your 5 star review, it means a great deal to myself and the team.
We hope you visit us again soon.

What a great location for getting round the centre . The staff were lovely on arrival getting us a cold drink and coffee whilst awaiting rooms and friends to arrive . The rooms are finished nicely , the only issue is that the bathrooms are quite small and only have a shower and there was no air conditioning and it was really hot the weekend I stayed . The garden was lovely outside the patio window and the staff were really helpful on recommending dinner reservations booking them and giving directions . Breakfast was a little slow as they don't appear to have enough staff to cope with everyone down at the same time but again great staff who rectified the situation when I mentioned the issue as there was also a mix up on orders .
I would definitely go back and stay in the hotel .

Dear Pab24,

Thank you for your review. It is great to hear that you made the most of our central location whilst visiting 'glorious Oxford'. I am glad the team looked after you well. I am sorry that you were dissatisfied with the size of your bathroom, hopefully next time you visit we could offer you something more to your liking as all our rooms are quite unique.
In regards to no air conditioning, due to the hotel being housed over 2 listed buildings, we were not permitted by the planning authority to install. We do however have fans in all rooms to make are guests as comfortable as possible during these summer months.
Thank you for taking the time to write and we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Stayed her overnight on Monday 26th August with my wife, we arrived early but the lady at reception took the luggage off our hands and gave some excellent pointers with regard to places to visit including The Red Lion Pub round the corner, a must visit! On returning to the hotel our case was already in our room, the staff were friendly, helpful polite and professional. The room was airy, bright spacious and spotlessly clean. A night cap downstairs outside on the terrace ended the perfect stay, I will not be staying anywhere else in Oxford and look forward to returning. Well done to all at the hotel and thank you.

We loved our stay at the Vanburgh House Hotel. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming, offering to carry bags as well as researching and printing maps for a hidden gem we had heard about - The Pitt Rivers museum, well worth a visit and an easy walk from the hotel.

We stayed in room 7, The Vicarage Suite, our friends (another couple) were in room 6, this worked nicely as we felt we were in our own little hotel, as these rooms are slightly separate with their own front door. The other rooms are upstairs or next door. The room was amazing! Beautifully decorated, clean and spacious, with the biggest, comfiest bed we have ever slept in. The bathroom was a bit of a talking point too, with not only under-floor heating, lovely toiletries and a massive rainwater shower, but 2 baths and a television.

On arrival we enjoyed a champagne afternoon tea in our private garden, which is a beautiful sun trap. This was so relaxing after a busy morning exploring the Cotswolds. The added bonus was the complimentary soft drinks, especially for the non-drinker in our group. Another lovely touch was the fresh milk for the complimentary teas and coffees. The hotel's central location made it so easy to explore Oxford, being on a side street to the pedestrian area it is surprisingly quiet though. This did mean that parking was a little tricky. Next time I would consider catching the train to Oxford, as you can explore so much by foot.

The font door slamming woke us in the morning but the cooked breakfast was very good and overall I would highly recommend this hotel and The Vicarage Suite is perfect for when you want something really special.
