“Fabulous Location and designer style”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2013

The hotel was good, excellent location, glamorously designed bedrooms, very stylish bathroom. Breakfast was included and really excellent choice and quality and staff were very attentive. Parking wasn't easy - you need to park in a public car park 5 minutes away which is expensive and very difficult if you have a lot of luggage. Front desk was situated in the guest lounge area which was confusing. Our room was located on the ground floor, and although it was a beautiful room it was very noisy with both street noise and also because it was located by the front door and front desk. I did complain about this but nothing was done, other than I was told that the hotel was not busy so it should not be a problem! I would not want to have that room again but I would probably go back to the hotel and I would recommend it - although I think for the price that we paid we should have been offered another room. The other problem is that there is no elevator, so if you do have a lot of luggage, it could be tricky! The mini bar was stocked with free water, milk and cookies, which was a very nice touch!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street to avoid the noise in the night as Oxford can be a party town.

Booked late online for £123 for a double including full breakfast. Excellent level of finish in room with media station with USB, PC inputs available for laptop to flat screen TV.
Free bottled still and sparkling water with good tea tray, biscuits and KitKat in room fridge.
Nice bathroom fixtures (only complaint was noisy fan but only came on when bathroom lights on)
Good breakfast in morning - cooked to order full English with pastries, fruit and cereals also laid out.
Lovely old building and hotel bar also really nice modern place.

Great value at rate I paid - I'm not sure prices will stay low once they are established.

Stayed here for one night on a weekend trip to Oxford. Loved the ambience of the place. Our room (a standard double) was compact but not small, with a really nice bathroom.
The hotel is right in the heart of Oxford, which had it's pros and cons. You are within walking distance of just about everything, but this is the middle of Oxford and they hate cars there, so you'll also have to walk to your car (Worcester St carpark is a short walk away but do budget to pay through the nose to park there, or anywhere in Oxford).
After a night out in Oxford we enjoyed a great cheese platter on the small terrace of the sunken restaurant. The heaters there kept us warm as we enjoyed the locally sourced cheeses. They really should push this sort of thing more as both the chef and waitress were passionate about their food and certainly knew their stuff.
We also had our full Oxfordshire breakfast on the terrace the next morning, and this was also very good.
Definitely recommending this place to some friends travelling over from the States later this year.

The location of the hotel was superb for exploring central Oxford. Both the inside and outside of the hotel were spotless and our superior double room was decorated and maintained to a very high standard. Breakfast was included in the tariff (with a charge of £5 to have it delivered to our room) and the generous portions were of excellent quality.
We would highly recommend the Vanbrugh House Hotel and wish we had booked to stay longer.

The only thing that was lacking at Vanbrugh House was a proper reception area. The lounge doubled up as the reception, but there was no desk. This left the staff trying to deal with arrivals and departures with a laptop balanced on a small round table. This meant that arrival and departure was rather messy, although this was absolutely not due to the staff. This was the only thing that let the hotel down, but would certainly not put us off staying again.

Incidentally we had no problem with noise during our stay, but our room - Trellis Room - was at the back of the hotel. However, a central city location is bound to have noise during the evening and to a certain extent should be expected, especially at certain times of the year. For example celebrations for the end of term exams.

Room Tip: If possible ask for a room located at the back of the hotel.

The hotel is right opposite the Union, close to the High Street and on a road which contains some restaurants and bars - you can't get a better spot in Oxford. We were in the St Michael's Room on the top floor and it was beautifully decorated and equipped. I like my gadgets and I haven't been anywhere which allowed you to connect virtually any media! The bed was large and very comfortable, the robes were very comfortable and the shower was powerful. The minibar contained fresh milk and free soft drinks and snacks - to the person who was churlishly complaining about the contents of a FREE minibar I just don't understand your complaint. Breakfast had very good ingredients and eggs benedict was a nice surprise. The only negatives were the cramped reception room and occasional noise when the bins at the Union were being emptied. It's not cheap but the market for hotels is buoyant in Oxford and we really enjoyed our stay. The restaurant looked nice but we didn't try it.

Nice building and beautifully decorated rooms. The staff is very polite. It is located at the center just opposite the Oxford Union. Very close to the bus station.

Generally speaking, it is a lovely place to stay in Oxford.

Just spent 2 nights in this stylish town centre hotel.
Despite a somewhat petite room,it had all we needed for a comfortable stay.
Very well positioned for the City centre and close to many bars & restaurants.
Rather surprised by policy to take £50 deposit upfront, not seen this mentioned prior to booking.
Just one warning, stairs, particularly to top floor are a challenge for those not in the first flush of youth!
