“Nice to have something different!”
Review of Formosan Tea Bar

Formosan Tea Bar
Ranked #7 of 29 Coffee & Tea in Oxford
Cuisines: Taiwanese
Description: With a great compassion for ancient Chinese tea culture, we carefully source all of our tea leaves directly from one of the best tea-farming regions in the world - Taiwan. Back home in Oxford, we adopt the authentic brewing process so we can take British tea drinkers to the next level of appreciating teas as part of their daily routine. They certainly make a hard day easier!

We had seen advertisements pointing to this tiny café but at last we were able to sample it. You can approach it two ways, firstly there is a small alleyway from the High Street and a board shows you the way past a seedy pub. Alternately, you can go along Blue Boar St. and there is an alleyway on the left which leads to it and ultimately to the High St.
The café itself is very clean and modern albeit tiny. There is a counter with stools opposite the serving counter and a back room is a traditional place where you take your shoes off and sit around a raised table oriental style.
The waiter greeted us and asked if we had been there before. We said we hadn't and he patiently explained the procedure. He gave us different small samples to try before we decided what we wanted. First of all you choose a tea base - China / Black / Taiwan / Jasmin / Green / Baked Oolong. Then you choose topping and flavour - whole milk / honey / lemon / topping Tapioca pearls which are black little pellets which are chewed. Then Ice and or sugar are added.
Additionally there are specials - Almond Milk Tea / Sesame Milk tea / Tea with seasonal jam.
They can also supply soya milk instead of whole milk for those like me who are dairy intolerant.
Once our order was placed, we were given a piece of paper with a number but were quickly served. The tea was in a plastic container and chilled with ice - just the thing on a hot day and we were given a straw which when unwrapped was to pierce the thin paper top sealing the tea.
There were nuts for sale but nothing else but tea. There is also a staff toilet which patrons can use if you ask and they control it with a button from behind the counter. It is clean albeit small and this makes sure that it is only used by customers. We were also given a loyalty card and if we have five teas we can have one free. We shall certainly return.

Very happy to find this gem of a Taiwanese tea bar tucked away in a passage in central Oxford and enjoy a refreshing cup of Tainan tea with pearls.

“Excellent tea.”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

This is the only place I can think of in Oxford that does bubble tea, and even if another opened, I'd probably stick with this place.

Great range of teas, and free samples given to customers that want to try other flavours.

The interior is great, with a small area to sit on cushioned floors,r you can sit by the window on raised seats.

As for food, they have two types of nuts.

If I had to be nitpicky, I'd say it was a little expensive. But it's well worth it.

“Always try to make a trip”

It is a bit expensive for something that in some parts of the world you can get for a fraction of the price but ... hey ... they are yummy and there are not many places in the Oxford where you can get an Almond Milk Tea with Tapioca Pearls!

“One of the favourites!”
Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

We used this place consistently throughout our month-long course in Oxford and it quickly became a place we felt comfortable and relaxed in. The staff we're very friendly and helpful, helping suggest teas to try and the place itself was amazing-cushion floors are located towards the back of the shop along with 'regular' window seating. Everything about this place is excellent and we can't wait to go back :-)
