“Best kitchen I've encountered in a hostel”
Reviewed November 14, 2012

I've found that YHA's are becoming less about youth and more about families and older people wanting somewhere cheap to stay. That being said, it suited me perfectly on this occassion as I really needed to chill. There were also a lot of people who were studying at Oxford University so got to meet some people studying some really fanscinating but obscure things.

The location is great, nice and close to the station. I actually walked padt because I wasn't expecting it to be that close. There is a spacious room as you enter, another lounge room, a library (handy I guess if you need somewhere quiet to study) and the best kitchen that I've come across anywhere. When somewhere advertises a kitchen, I've come to expect a microwave, fridge, couple of plates and if you're REALLY lucky a portable hotplate. But this place had several oven/cooktops so it actually was a kitchen. And unlike the dodgy fridges in most places where you end up with luke warm milk, the actually come around on a daily basis to check that the fridges are at the correct temperature.

I said in a 6 bed female dorm that had its own ensuite. Only annoying thing was that there were two princesses in my room who literally took an hour in the morning to do their hair and makeup so I had to go use a different bathroom.

Overall great value for money!

I stayed here half term with my wife and kids in a family room. It's well located for the town centre and trips to the museums. There's a park and ride about a mile up the road and the railway station is next door. You can cook your own meals in the communial kitchen and there's also a canteen style restaurant. It's my first time at a YHA and I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The place is well organised, clean and comfortable and very good value. I shall be checking out more YHA's in other towns.

Many good points:
- well located, just behind the railway station
- a well provided self catering catering
- nice and welcoming staff
- a lounge room and a quiet room (the library)
- good beds

But a strong weak point: this hostel smells very strange, like a giant fish and chips shop. I guess they have ventilation (airing) issues.

Well anyway, it's hard to find more valuable for money in Oxford, so in the end, I would recommend it.

We stayed here when walking the Thames Path and found it one of the nicest city hostels we have stayed in. A private room with en-suite facilities just a short walk from the city centre and next door to the station. A great place to meet fellow travellers, it has a good bar.

Me and 3 friends were in town for a music event and decided on this hostel for the location and price.

We had a private room and it was much larger than we expected, beds were clean and all round was a good choice..

Highly recommend it for a cheap place to crash...

This is a good option if you're staying in Oxford on a budget. It's literally a stone's throw away from the train station, and a few minutes' walk to the bus station.

The property is well-maintained, even though it has some quirks. There are lots of beige doors in this property that could do well to be marked eg "to reception".

Unfortunately, internet is not free.

The little cafe at reception was convenient and prices no much worse than you'd find elsewhere. The breakfast was not bad for 5 pounds.

I liked the library - I found a good book to read there and it was quiet (albeit cold).

No elevator. But nice they had a luggage storage room (for a fee, after check in - bring coins).

The rooms were not bad. They smelled a little bit (you can tell from the presence of little plastic air fresheners on the cabinets that they are at least trying to combat the issue). The shower (ensuite) was pretty bad - the nozzle didn't jet out over the temperature control so you were essentially hugging the wall to try and get wet. Not good water pressure.

The bunk beds were wooden and sturdy. I really appreciated the individual reading lamps on each bed. The duvets were OK, although the size was on the small side.

The room got really cold at night. They provided a small plug in heater, but it actually didn't work worth beans.

The neat little wardrobe set up had an optional locking cupboard (you need to bring your own lock of course).

At least the room had a couple of outlets for charging your phone.

Overall, I think this is a good choice for someone who is on a budget but needs a central place to stay in Oxford. I'd consider it again in a pinch. This is a good hostel. I should also add it is definitely NOT for youth - two of the women in my room were older than my mother. So don't feel put off if you're older - it's an all-encompassing age group place.

This hostel is right next to Oxford train station which is useful, if not a little loud in some rooms overlooking the railway line. The room smelt awful which I can only presume was due to the state of the carpet as no-one was in our room the whole day (we were in a group with a private dorm to ourselves.) After leaving the window closed for a few hours whilst we were out exploring, we returned to a terrible smell in our room which never went.

It's worth noting that this hostel is not wheelchair-friendly-there are no lifts in the building so you must use the stairs to get to the rooms.

There are a number of common rooms (including a quiet room) and a large garden area.

Check-in is strictly 2:30pm but you can leave your luggage in their luggage room if you arrive early and want to leave your bags somewhere safe.

The bedding was clean, warm and comfortable (very good mattresses) & each bed has its own bedside light so you can read without having to keep the whole room awake.

The room also has large lockers to keep your luggage locked safely away if you're sharing a room with others you don't know (just be sure to take your own padlock to lock it.)

Overall, this hostel is good value for money with a comfy bed, spacious rooms in an average location.
