I was just passing through Oxford for a night and was a bit taken aback by the price of accomodation in town so ended up staying at the YHA, booking and paying for a private room because I'm a bit over hostelling now.

Room was a small double which was very comfortable, okay storage space with a lockable cupboard (supply your own padlock). The bathroom is a little tight but nevertheless decent by hostel standards and the breakfast was fine. My room was facing away from the train station so I did not hear the trains at all and slept well. It's an easy walk into town and of course you just have to come under the train lines from the main station. Breakfast was fine.

The laundry room is very small - there are only two washers and two dryers and only one of each was actually working when I was there. You might want to check a machine is available (and if it's the one that takes coins or tokens) before buying a token from reception.

All in all I'd be happy to stay here again.

I travelled to Oxford on my own for a uni friend's wedding so just needed somewhere basic to crash for the weekend - YHA did the job. I was originally worried about sharing a room with rowdy students who would turn up drunk early in the morning, but it seemed that the staff made an effort to group similar travellers together. I was in a 4 bed dorm sharing with 3 other mature ladies, one here for sight-seeing, one for a literary festival and another for a job interview.

All the basics are working fine, toilet and shower in each dorm with extra toilets and bath in the hallway. Lockers (need padlock, bring your own or hire one from reception) and hangers available. A minor problem is that the shower curtain is a bit flimsy and so water splashed out and flooded the bathroom...we quickly learnt the lesson, turning down the water jet helped prevent further flooding. What it needs is some sort of a cubicle door instead though, but at least the water is hot.

Breakfast is £5 extra, and it's ok (a plate of cooked english breakfast and as much continental stuff as you want). If you are staying more than one night, I would advise just paying the first one in advance with your booking rather than your whole stay though to see if you like the food first. You can always buy the subsequent tokens from the reception after you have arrived. I changed my mind and didn't want breakfast the second day but couldn't get a refund. It has a kitchen for self-catering so you could always buy some light snacks from the local supermarkets and keep them in the fridge.

I'm a light sleeper myself so bound to have got woken up by room mates coming/going/getting up/snoring, and there happened to be a drunk kid who woke the whole corridor up by banging on the next dorm at 3am demanding to be let in! But it's expected for a youth hostel, and for ~£20 a night it quite decent value. Quite a few of the fellow wedding guests turned out to have some nasty experience with their B&Bs so I considered myself quite fortunate. If you prefer more privacy I would recommend individual college rooms at the university as the next step up.

We had a horrible experience at YHA Oxford. Three times in the middle of the night, fire alarm woke us up. When we evacuated there was no one there so we went inside to find member of staff partying and saying not to worry, it's false alarm! After that we felt completely unsafe during out stay (what if there was real fire?). We didn't even get an apology. Location and rooms are ok but ensuite bathroom was horribly dirty. Definitely not worth the price.

I was in a six bed women's dorm (three double bunks), on the ground floor, right near the office and foyer - very convenient. There was an ensuite shower and toilet for the dorm, a locker for each bed, a small desk, power points for recharging, and plenty of floor space. There is a dining room, and the staff there coped wonderfully with a large group of German 13 year olds, and breakfast was great, with plenty of choice, and once again plenty of room to sit. Good location, too, near the station and a short walk to the centre of town. Front desk staff just a little bored with it all - see "hectoria's " comment.

Room Tip: If you want ground floor you should ask when booking.

we stayed for one night and were very pleased with the room, it was quite big for a 2 bedded room and very clean.
The staff were lovely and reception is staffed 24hrs which is handy.
Despite being next to the train station we wern't disturbed by trains, overall the bhostel was very quite.
Breakfast as always was lovely and very good value for all you can eat.
The communal areas were very clean and well maintained
Would definately recommned this youth hostel

I needed somewhere cheap, friendly & near to the station to stay as the hotels that I liked the look of are v expensive in Oxford. YHA Oxford fitted the bill. Friendly, warm, relaxed or busy depending on the time of the day;in effect all things to all men.Sharing a 6 bed room is a bit odd sometimes-one night there were 4 Japanese girls and me. I slept ok after the first night though found the room stuffy. The storage is fine, the room fine & separate shower & loo for the room was fine though I prefer to use the additional, larger , shower room down the corridor.
Breakfast was OK-I didnt try the hot food. The cafe/bar is comfortable for relaxing with good coffee & the staff do their best to be kind. You can store luggage after you have checked out which is useful though there is no receipt system. All in all it was as expected & a pleasant walk into town.
Ponts to watch:
a) I had a 2nd floor room & there is no lift. I had a heavy case as had been away for the previous 7 days before.
b) it can be noisy as its right next to the station
c) the standard of cleanliness is a bit patchy in loos/showers.Its a v busy hostel
d) If you need to know something just ask;got the feeling that the staff get a bit bored having to explain stuff all the time. For example they dont say that there are showers/loos along the corridor from your room

Room Tip: Get a twin room if you can (not sure if you can book it for solo occupancy though)
