“Out of town and adj Stadium”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

I recently stayed for one night as part of a business conference in mid week. The hotel has a very business like feel to it with its polished/refelctive surfaces and understated decoration. Plenty of lobby area seating and a light, airy breakfast room.
The room I was allocated to was spacious with a view over the car park. Noise was ok and cleanliness was impeccable. Hot in-room beverage tray was the usual sachets of tea and coffee so take your own cafetieres and fresh coffee/cream if you look forward to that 'first impression brew'.
Because of the hotels location next to football stadium and away from the town, it will not please every hotel goer due to proximity to entertainment etc. I found it above average for business and even took advantage of a discount at the nearby, fresh oriental buffet restaurant located in the VUE cinema complex some 600 yds away.
The staff at the Holiday Inn were very well turned out, smart and polite. There was an air of efficiency that I found quite appealing. A single pint of Worthington Ale at the bar was a preferable night cap and I must admit the beverage prices were well below my initial expectations (i.e were cheaper). Breakfast was standard fare with quite the choice of cereals and toast/croissant & preserves. Self service coffee machines and juice section; really well laid out but if a few people are in there at the same time; could be a bit of a cauldron featuring proximity, elbows and apologies :)
For all you dog lovers out there, next to the cinema is a local 'spit and sawdust' pub with smell of old labrador filling your nostrils upon entry andd the bar is filled with jovial local characters (may be a novelty experience risking a swift half before venturing over to 'Vue for food' or even a film!).
I would happily stay at the hotel again providing it was business purposes and having a car was must. Big thanks to the management & staff for the hospitality.

Room Tip: I was in 201 which faced car park so stadium facing rooms may be better to ask for (quieter).

Dear Guest

Thank you for sending us your comments. I am pleased that you were very happy with the hospitality. It is very uplifting to read such a positive review, particularly with regard to our staff.
I have noted that you were attending a conference and that the location was good for that. I would also like to mention the transport links:
Taxis: we have arranged a £10 fixed charge to the City Centre/or train station with 001 Taxis which can be booked via reception or directly on 01865 240000
Buses: there is avery regular service to the Centre, take bus 1 or 5
Park & Ride is a very popular option as parking in the centre is expensive

Kind regards

At £90 per night this place is expensive. A basic hotel that doesn't even have a restaurant in the evenings. Have stayed in much better for much less. They even charge extra for wifi. Breakfast was average. Help yourself cooked breakfast was sausage, beans and scrambled egg. Where's the bacon!! If you hit the restaurant at its busy period its like a feeding frenzy as there isn't much room to get what you want. They do cater for most tastes though.

Room Tip: Go to a better hotel!

Dear Guest

Thank you for sending us your comments. I am sorry that you found us expensive. We aim to offer best value whenever possible. In quieter periods the price is lower, but when we are full the price increases. Unlike most of our competitors we offer a complimentary breakfast.
We do not have a restaurant in the hotel, but there are three restaurants just four minutes walk from the hotel: Aziz (Indian), Frankie & Benny's (American style) and Oxy (Oriental/Chinese). Hotel guests can charge back to their rooms from Aziz and Oxy: both restaurants offer 10% discount off food, for hotel guests

Nothing much to add to some of the previous write ups. There is no denying that this is a bit of a hike from town; even a bit of a walk to the park&ride but to be fair, they have negociated a flat £10 taxi rate as long as you are only going to 'the centre' (Carfax Towers) and not trying to do anything funny the wrong side of Jericho.

The room was clearn, comfortable and quiet and we loved the design of the bathroom/toilet door.

Breakfast was OK, although the enclosed serving area was a bit of a scrum at busy times.

Local facilities alright as long as your happy with a few chain restaurants, cinema, bowling alley etc.

Overall a good compromise between price and proximity to town.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room next to a bed linen store which probably reduced the chance of noise (Rm 127)

This hotel is ideally placed if you need to stay in the Oxford area but want to avoid the traffic jams. The rooms are clean and have all the usual tea / coffee making facilities etc. Breakfast is standard HI Express fare and there are a number of food options on the leisure park next door. Staff are very efficient and booking in etc is very quick. Overall a good business hotel.

Room Tip: Certain rooms overlook the football stadium with pitch views.

I stayed here for a week while on business and was happy with the level of accommodation. The room was kept very clean. It was comfortable for the week and the rooms were a good size. It's on the outskirts of Oxford so I wouldn't recommend it if you're travelling into the city every day but if you're based at the Oxford Science Park then it's the perfect location. There is no restaurant at the hotel but they do offer breakfast. The breakfast is the same every day which after a week left me wanting a change. The food quality was pretty average and the choice of fresh fruit never changed ( green apples every day ). The selection consisted of cereals, bread for toast, croissants, muffins, fresh coffee, tea, juices, cooked sausages, beans, scrambled eggs. I never tried the eggs as they looked like they were made from a dried mix, but the other stuff was ok. Nothing to write home about but for the cost of the room not bad. There are a couple of restaurants near by at a bowling/cinema complex if you don't want to venture in the city for dinner.

Overall I'm not sure i would choose to spend any more than a couple of nights here if I were a personal traveller but for business or a stopover I would happily return.

After my title comments I have to sit back and think what I liked about this place....great location is about all I can say unless you want fast access to downtown. Now back to the other side. You can feel every bed spring, the breakfast is not up to the level of the many other UK and EU hotels I've stayed at. The walls are thin, glad I did not have any teenagers with me as your could hear, let's just stay ...adult activity going on. The price was almost double of what my four star Heathrow airport hotel was. Just not a good value, I will look elsewhere next time. With all that said, the staff was friendly...

Clean rooms. Hot water. Quiet. Easy to find. Good breakfast, friendly staff, good value for money. The matress was very springy and had a plastic cover on it that was hot, but was ok for one night. The hotel is not a direct bus route and we had to walk through an estate to get the bus. Ok in day light but didnt fancy it at night so we got a cab back which was pricey. Allow £15!
