This place has changed a lot since it turned from a regular football friendly pub to a proper gastro-pub. If you're looking for good food hidden away off the Cowley Road, it's definitely worth checking out.

I have eaten here a few times on and off in the year since my first review, and it is only consistent in one regard - its inconsistency. There are four hand pumps at the bar, but none were in operation on a summer Saturday, reducing the choice of beer to Stella, Kirin or Guinness. In the past we have had to accept a third or fourth choice of wine due to lack of our first choices off the list. None of this inspires confidence - it's all just a bit depressingly amateur, as if a bunch of strangers had been asked to play at running a restaurant for the night.
Service is friendly enough and well-intentioned, but fairly erratic - why were we chivvied to move to the table every couple of minutes when having a drink at the bar, for instance? The turnover in staff seems to preclude any serious training, even in the basics of leaving plates on the table until everyone has finished eating (an earlier beef of mine, which still holds true).
The food is the best thing about the place, and the most reliable aspect of a night out here - good crunchy calamari, beetroot and blue cheese salad, burger with decent chips (but slightly torched bacon topping), well-executed pork belly on bubble-and-squeak and simple puddings. Despite this I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a much higher degree of professionalism in a pub which charges about £40/head for dinner - a casual atmosphere is good, but for your customers to relax they need to feel in safe hands, and I'm afraid I never feel like that at the Blue, unfortunately.

Great place with a HUGE welcome. Food was out of this world, do have the spare ribs with bubble and squeak, amazing! As a starter I had Beetroot and blue cheese salad, absolutely lovely. My wife had Haddock fishcakes and three fried chips, which she raved over
The South African waiter is an asset to the place, great personality very friendly with a joke or two. I even think my sister may have been flirting with him, and she doesn't do that! Pay the man double his wages, he should go on the stage.
First class Oxford Blue.
